Help with Sim Only Swap

Hi everyone,

I've had a pay monthly sim only contract for a long while (much longer than 12 months) and now would like to upgrade to a Christmas offer from Vodafon SIMO Red Bundle (20 GB data, unlimited calles/txts).

My phone is an old model, so is a sim, so I am going to buy a new smart phone shortly.

Therefore I have a few questions please:

1. Can I ugrade my old s/o contract to a new one as the time limit for it expired anyway and a new tariff more expensive?

2. If some phones on sale listed as "sim free" (implying can be used by any provider), can I opt for such ( and if so how do I use a sim)? Or does it have to be a specifically Vodafon locked device?

3. Will I be able to keep my old number? And how do I know what type of sim I need to swap for.

4. As I have not been using internet on my phone, approximately how much data is used by Viber/other apps, for example?

If obviously not to overdo it on a daily basis?

Thank you very much for advice and comments.

Hi @VforV

It is impossible to say how much data an application will use, it is always best to use WiFi where possible.  You will need to monitor your data usage through the online account, My Vodafone Application and by calling 44555.

If you are upgrading, you will keep the same number.  The only thing you will need to do is a SIM swap to the correct size SIM for the new phone.  As this needs to be done to a plain blank SIM, the best place to get this done is through a Vodafone Store.

Alternatively, you can ask for Vodafone to send you a new SIM and do a SIM swap through your online account.

Phones sold by Vodafone will be locked to the network.  If you want an unlocked phone, it will be best to purchase through an independant reseleller.

Further info for your SIM swap below.

If you give upgrades a call or call into a store, they will be able to help with a new SIM only contract.

@ Ann S:

Thank you very much for a prompt reply.

So they would be able to swap my sims in the shop there and then, and I won't have to wait for it through the post?

Another one: given I am a long term existing customer, is there any possibility they might say the Red Sim only offer for new customers only?

Independant retailer sells Microsoft phone which I am after with a note "sim free" (all networks). Would Vodafone be able to find the matching sim?

Thanks yet again. Just trying to sort this out before Xmas holidays.

Yes it's a process carried out in the Vodafone High street store.

Regarding deals and offers we are fellow customers so really customer services would need to answer this part.

Just use the gsmarena site from specs information. More often than not Vodafone use a multi sim where you press out the size you need.

May I ask the full phone model number and I'll check for you what size it takes.

Hi Lee, thanks for the answers.

I presumed you were Vodafon e-forum representatives.

I am thinking of Microsoft Lumia 650 one.

PS When you mentioned Iphone would lock to one network automatically, does this mean that even if it was to stay with that same network, another new sim/only upgrade could not be done in the future?

Hi,

It takes a Nano Sized SIM Card.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/mobile/phone/lumia650/specifications/#

http://www.gsmarena.com/microsoft_lumia_650-7859.php

"SIM Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)"

Regarding the iPhone I spoke about.

To clarify.

When a person inserts a Networks SIM card in the iPhone this will activate the iPhone and will lock out to that network.

So for example if you inserted a Vodafone SIM card in the iPhone it would then not allow you to insert for example an EE SIM card.

A person would have to meet the criteria to unlock it via the network it's locked to to be able to use another network.

This was one of the reasons I purchased my iPhones direct from Apple , SIM free.

Vodafone employees on the forum have the Vodafone Logo next to their name.

Hi @VforV

Thank you for your reply, I am sorry I was so long getting back to you.

Definitely, do the swap in store, it will be completed within the hour.

I would certainly call Vodafone and discuss a discount, if you are out of contract, you are in a good bargaining position.  Take a look at what the other networks are offering for the same thing and ask the advisor to better the deal.

It might be also be worth asking Vodafone about a phone contract, you could end up with a fantastic deal with a subsidised new phone.  If the new phone comes locked, Vodafone will unlock it for free after the first 3 months payments.

Hi again Ann S, not to worry.:)

Microsoft phone being just over £100 to buy on-line (new model) will be better off sim only option, as £21 per monthly Voda deal hardly subsidise this relatively cheap device.

20GB sounds good to me but have to find out if this is available to me though.

What do I say if they suggest this deal is for new comers only?

I heard people warn they'd leave, but for where I live Vodafone is the best network coverage, though not perfect for it's so rural here.

Hi @VforV

I shouldn't say this really, call Vodafone and ask for your PAC code.  They will want to know the reason you want to leave, you then tell the agent what you want.  It then depends on your negotiating skills.

Hope it works for you.

@VforV I've seen nothing on our website to indicate the 20GB SIM only plan for £22.20 per month is only for new customers.

You can upgrade onto this plan in store, online through your My Vodafone account or by calling our Upgrades team on 191.
