Huawei K3520 modem lite - device found but does not search for network

Hi from a newbie here, :blush:

I recently purchased a mobile broadband account with the above modem, primarily for use on a Samsung N150 netbook running Windows 7 starter.
Everything appeared to go well and I was soon connected and surfing.

The trouble is, almost every time I go to connect, the process gets as far as the device being detected, but then no search for a connection starts no matter what I do. It's not that the connect button remains greyed out - it dfoesn't even get as far as appearing! The program just sits there informing me that the device is detected and the stick flashes green. :huh:

The only way that I can make progress is to reinstall the software every time I connect the stick - a frustrating process which takes up time. Once I've done that, then everything works well again... until the next time!

I've connected the device to an Acer laptop running WinXP with no initial problem too... however I haven't yet tried connecting the modem to that machine a second time yet. to asee if the same thing happens on that. I will try that later when I get a chance, but in the meantime, any suggestions for having to reinstall the device every time I plug it in to the netbook would be gratefully received!

I'm afraid I've not really heard of any issues like this one before. Would it be possible for you to upload a screenshot of exactly what the Vodafone software is doing so we can get a better understanding of the problem?

Sorry if I haven't made myself very clear...

When I plug in the stick, I get this:

incidentally at this point the options in the icon bar include a non-greyed out 'connect command, though nothjing happens if you click on it:


However that's where things tend to stop happening. After that, if I'm lucky then I am able to disconnect and reconnect the device and it will work the second time (without properly ejecting it though, which is a worry in itself). If I'm unlucky then I have to reinstall the software before it will get to this point:


Once it does reach a point where it searches for a connection, then everything is plain sailing after that... but getting there is very frustrating. It took me 20 minutes earlier today to establish the connection!

Are you putting the netbook into Standby or Hibernate mode?

If you are then this is what is probably causing the problem.

Drivers can become corrupt due to your computer going on standby or hibernating without the datacard being shut down properly beforehand. If this happens close down the Vodafone Mobile Connect software, then safely eject the datacard, restart your PC and reinsert the data card. This should rectify the problem. If the problem still occurs reinstall the Vodafone Mobile Connect application software.

To avoid this problem, remember to close your Vodafone Mobile Connect software and remove the data cards prior to placing your computer in 'hibernate' or 'standby' mode.

Please advise if the above is not the case

No, II'm afraid this isn't the case.

Like I said, if I unplug the device *without* safely ejecting it, sometimes it will work properly when it is plugged back in straight away.

If I safely eject it, then the next time it is plugged in, it stops after recognising the mobile device but before searching for the network. It doesn't matter whether I have shut down and rebooted the system or not. (But that is always a full shut down - I never use hibernate, standby or sleep mode.)

... by the way - I should have added, reinstalling the application software definitely doesn't resolve the problem... as I said in my first post,. I often have to reinstall the software to get the thing to work!!!! I#ve lost count of the times I've reinstalled the software! ;)

I've made another discovery whilst trying to get this to work (unsuccessfully) for the last 15 minutes...
When the device reaches that point in the screenshot above where it says that the mobile device is detected, and then hangs, and doesn't search for a network, I cannot safely eject the device, either from the 'safely remove hardware' icon in the icon tray. or by going in to 'My Computer' and selecting eject from the right click options there. No matter how many times I click on eject, the device remains connected (with the LED flashing steady green - single). To remove it, I either have to do so without safely ejecting it or I have to shut the computer down, which is not exactly a useful technique when I am in the middle of working!

I bought the netbook and the modem/contract together as a bundle. Surely it's not too much to expect it to work?

I'm afraid I've not seen this behaviour before, so will need to defer to one of our Mobile Broadband specialists.

It may help if you could upload a logfile for us so we can see exactly what's going on with your netbook when the modem is plugged in. To get this logfile, click on Start > Run
Type in "msinfo32" and press OK.

Then press File > Save/Export as... and save the log as a .txt file. You can then upload that here to the forum.
