Solution

K3760 Regularly Dropping Connection

Not applicable
I have had a K3760 USB modem for a few months now, and it has been working successfully on my XP Laptop.

However, recently I have been having regular connection problems with this modem.
So I carried out the firmware upgrade process for this USB modem, detailed here:
http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=25736

But this has not improved things.

What is happening is that after connection, around a few minutes later, the connection will disconnect, and Vodafone Mobile connect will report that No Device found.
I then have to close down Mobile Connect and reopen for it to recognise the modem again and reconnect.
Then again it will disconnect after a few minutes.

Can anyone please assist as this is now becoming unusable!

Version numbers:

Vodafone Mobile connect Lite: v9.3.6.12095
Device: GlobeTrotter HSUPA MOdem, 1.5.0.0Hd

Many thanks

Hi Golfather,

That's a rather odd issue

I haven't come across this before, so the very first thing I would suggest is to send the modem off for a free repair under warranty.
If you still have the same problem after we replace the hardware, then we'd need to start looking for some sort of software conflict, but as this issue is intermittent it's likely to be very tricky to track down :(

Do you have this problem when using any other computer?

Good idea, I havent tried the dongle with another laptop.
Will try tonight and see how I get on.
I suppose its a process of elimination with this one.

I obtained a K3760 at the end of 2008. I had various issues over the months, and hoped that these would be cleared when the new software/firmware was released for the K3760 in June.

I installed the latest software - and initially it did appear that this had stabilised it somewhat - however a pattern of behaviour quickly emerged, consistent with what is described in this post.

When I try to connect - the connection is established for a very short while, usually seconds or perhaps minutes and then dropped repeatedly. It will report "no device", error 633 - even though the modem is still showing a steady blue light - which would indicate that the modem is still connected to the mobile network - but the device driver and the modem are not in sync.

It can take 20-30 minutes for this to settle down - and then usually (provided my patience lasts that long) the modem stays connected - potentially for several hours.

I have been watching to see if any new driver updates would be issued - however nothing has happened on that front.

I am using Windows XP SP2.

I have looked at lots of other posts - e.g. ones indicating that wireless should be turned off etc - however these recommendations appear to be irrelevant.

I have become very frustrated with this now - and would like to either get this resolved - or cease this service - as I am clearly not getting what I believe I have paid for.

I do not believe that this is a location-related issue - because I have tried this in various parts of the UK, when travelling on business - and similar behaviour is obtained in these locations.

Its funny you mention this today, as I am STILL having issues with my dongle.
The same as what you have described above.

Some days (very rarely) it is absolutely fine and remains connected the whole day, proving that the laptop and drivers are OK too.
On others, it disconnects within minutes.

I can only think it is a faulty dongle or connection and will be taking it back to a Vodafone store today demanding a replacement

Hi paul oneill,

Welcome to the eForum and thanks for posting about your dongle here you've come to the right place. I'm sorry to hear you've had continued problems with the connection. As you mentioned you have travelled around a fair bit and get the same result this strongly suggests to me that there may be a hardware fault with the dongle itself.

Have you let our guys at the Vodafone Repair Centres take a look at this? It's free and within the manufacturer's warranty but to be honest I am surprised you are getting connection problems repeatedly. If our engineers deem the device beyond economical repair then we will replace the device.

Let me know how you get on with this.

Thanks,

Adam

Hi there

I have just come from the Vodafone retail shop in Harrow and they advised they couldnt do anything for me apart from send it off for repair.
This can take around 10 days.
However I will be without a dongle for that period of time even though I will still be paying for Line Rental.
So I did not take up the offer.

Is there any other option that I have that will be quicker?

Is there a walk in repair centre that I could take it to?

Thanks

Hi golfather,

I'm afraid not. The repairs process is the only option we are able to offer :(

I have had the same problems with my K3760 for a while now, and likewise am unwilling to be without net access for up to 10 days whilst still paying.

You'd think Vodafone would loan you a replacement whilst yours is sent away for repair.

I've decided to just suffer it and see out the contract before switching to a different provider.

Shame really, as when it works it's quite good, but it just doesn't work well consistantly enough.

:(
