Leaving Vodafone - 2 Questions

Hi,

My contract ends on the 29th June and I'd like to port my number away to another network. I want to sign up with a new network as close to the 29th as possible to avoid any overlap but I also don't want to be billed past the 29th with Vodafone.

What do I need to do to ensue this doesn't happen? Do I call before May 29th say I intend to end my contract and ask for my PAC code? Does this count as the 30 days notice even if I don't use my PAC code till say, 25th June?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

A PAC code remains Live for 30 days when issued by Vodafone.

Ask for your code and use it within those 30 days it Live close to your actual contract end date.

30 days notice normally required by Vodafone  isn't needed because when the other network uses the PAC code this automatically immediately ends your Vodafone contract.

Do not cancel your Direct Debit until Vodafone send you your final bill by post which is paid by your DD and then they send you a £0 bill and Sorry your Leaving Letter which confirms account cancellation.

If you intend to move as close to 29Jun, then request the PAC between 15-22Jun.

Give it to your new network around 24/26th.. Most likely you will be moved by 29th.

And requesting PAC does not constitute as 30 Day Notice. If you don't give the PAC to your new provider within 30 days, then you contract continues.

But migrating away on the 29th would close the contract and prevent future billing after my contract end date?

Yes, your contract will cease on the day your number transfers to a new provider.

Networks have a cut off time for providing them your PAC code, Vodafone for example is 5:00 PM. If you provide the PAC code before this cut off time it would usually transfer the day after. Give it after the cut off time and it would be the day after that and transfers only happen Monday to Friday.

Looking at the date you are talking about, the 26th June is a Monday so give your new provider your PAC code on Monday or Tuesday and it should be transferred by Wednesday 28th June. You will still be liable to pay Vodafone up to and including the 29th June but nothing beyond.

That's great thanks.

I do have one more question. I found a good deal with Vodafone but through a third party website (mobiles.co.uk)

Vodafone don't allow Vodafone-Vodafone porting so I'd need to port my number away and then back again. Does Vodafone impose a time limit on how quickly you can port back a number?

You are partially correct however you don't need to port your number to another network, there is another way.

What you need to do is give Vodafone thirty days notice to move your current contract onto PAYG. Wait until around the third week of this notice, (day twenty one or so), and then order your new deal from the third party provider.

When you receive the new handset from the third party supplier get it up and running making sure everythng is okay.  Importantly, do not register a new account with this number on My Vodafone yet, if you port a number across to this account it can be problematic changing it later.

On day thirty your original contract will become PAYG. It can happen any time of day but in my own experience it happens quite early on, now your original contract with Vodafone is finished.   If you still wish to have access to your online account relating to this number it's important to have another phone number registered on the account prior to this happening,  otherwise there is no way to receive the text message with the six digit number.

On the same day fill out the form to transfer your old PAYG number to your new contract.

This should happen next working day but transfers don't happen over the weekend.

The next working day your number should be transferred to your new contract. Once the transfer has happened you may need to turn your phone fully off and back on again to complete the process, rebooting the phone is not enough.

Now  you are free to use your new contract with your old number happy in the knowlege that for the small amount of effort you are now getting much better value than upgrading directly with Vodafone. Also you can now register an account with your number on My Vodafone but you must use a new email address in the process.

Easiest solution to keep your number is to port to PayGo on another network (which will end your current contract), then back in to your new contract.

WRT to trying to cut it as close as possible to your current contract end date I would be careful. Sometimes the port doesn't go through on the day stated or carries over to the next day. You don't want to be stung for an extra month on your old contract for the sake of trying to avoid a couple of days cross over between your old and new contract.
