M symbol

There is a M in a box symbol next to vodafone uk and whenever I power on the text message notification sounds although there is no new message.

Sounds like you've got an email in your Gmail inbox. Swipe down from the top of the screen and you'll see the notification

If you pull down from the top of the screen, you drop what's known as the Notification Blind.   This will show detail for all the little symbols, such as which applications have updates and the subject of a new email.

It's worth going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the full manual for your phone as it contains a lot more detail than the little Getting Started guide and you'll often find features you never knew existed (I learnt something about mine yesterday :smileywink:)

You have a G Mail email message.  Just go onto your G Mail where you will be able to read your email.
