Mobile Broadband Abroad - What Are The Costs?

ibean2007

Hi all

I have been with Vodafone Mobile Broadband for many months now, I am on the DELL Mini Laptop deal, giving me 1GB of data a month for £20.

The laptop is for emergencies and therefore I use the mobile broadband for a maximum of about an hour a month, so very little use.

In 2 weeks time I am off to Turkey for a 8 day holiday and will need to collect emails while there, I plan to take the mini DELL laptop and I asume as it uses a SIM card for internet connection, it should work fine while there.

My question is, what sort of charges would I be looking at? I know that my 1GB monthly usage isn't going to valid outside the UK. Is there a better & cheaper way of getting an internet connection?

Do you think that as I don't use much of my 1GB monthly usage, that Vodafone may allow me some bandwidth usage whilst outside the UK?

Thanks

Mark

Hi ibean2007 and welcome to the forum :)

You're right in saying your 1GB allowance is for UK use only and so the roaming charges would be seperate to your price plan.

Daily charge
UK calendar day, midnight-to-midnight (inc.VAT)
Europe:
£9.99 for 50MB
World: £29.99 for 50MB

For Turkey, as this is not currently within Europe, then the £29.99 charge would apply.

See more information by checking out this link for Roaming Broadband charges.

Also, we all lead busy lives and so its a great idea to manage your account online at your own leisure.

You can monitor your usage throughout the month and on your return from Turkey, by registering for My Account, been as you are already online using or forum, why not take 5 minutes to check out all the services you can manage yourself without the need for contacting 191. We've recently increased the amount of control a customer has over their own account and this now is up to 60% of what Customer Services can do for you, which is great when you can avoid busier times of the day and not having to wait to speak to someone.

Enjoy your holiday! I am in dire need of some sun! B-)

Look forward to seeing you around the forum again soon.

The costs are prohibative. The cheapest method abroad (using ones own laptop) is using free wifi at a cafe. If you do not want to rely on wifi; get a £150 ubi surfer laptop from Maplin. The cost per minute is very much less than vodafone costs

OUCH!! £30 for 50mb, a little high isn't it?

I have my 1GB monthly usage, but I rarely use the any of that, therefore can I not get a discount on that 50mb deal?

Other than that, how can I purchase 50mb, or does it automatically switch when I use it there?

Thanks

Hi again ibean2007

I appreciate what you're saying, it may seem high to be honest, but comparing this to what the charges were for mobile broadband roaming before we revised them recently, then this would have been £4.99 per MB.

Now you get 50MB for this same price in Europe, or £29.99 throughout the rest of the world.

There isnt a way of purchasing this allowance before you travel as you are a contract customer and are billed after the usage has been used as part of your monthly invoice.

It will automatically start charging these rates, when you start connecting when you are abroad.

Enjoy your holiday! B-)

Wow! That is a ridiculously exorbitent cost.

I am calling a friend in Canada this week. The costs are:

Using my BT landline: 11.5p per minute

Using my VF mobile: £1.50 per minute

It's over 10 times the cost to use my mobile than my landline! How on earth do mobile phone companies justify such ridiculous over-pricing?
