Mobile Broadband - Changing to iPhone can I still use mobile Broadband

Stravonian

I have monthly Vodafone mobile broadband which is out of contract.

The thing is, I use it very rarely.

So here's my plan, and I'm hoping someone in the know can tell me if this will work.

What I'm thinking of doing is changing it to an iPhone (monthly) because I would use that a lot more often. But if I do this, will I be able to take the iPhone SIM out and use it in the mobile broadband dongle?

Hi,

With the iPhone, you can set up for internet tethering, so using the device as a modem. There is an additional cost on top of the tariff for this service though.

With regards to your SIM in a modem, that may work, depending on the APN settings. Is the modem you currently have contract or Pay As You Go?

Somebody changed my topic title - my spelling isn't that bad - honestly!

Actually the tethering option would be fine. Can't see (technically) why there would be an additional charge.

Could someone from Vodafone confirm my options here?

Hi Stravonian

ElCapitan has got this spot on, thanks for the advise here ;)

There are 3 tethering options available if you put your SIM in the dongle, you can also just connect the iPhone to your computer and use that as a modem. The charges are different as the data bundles in the iPhone contracts are for the use directly on the phone itself not for tethering.

The 3 prices are:
500MB for £5 - This is if you don't have a bundle on your contract.
1.5GB for £10 - This is a bundle which is applied to your account, which you can add and remove whenever you need it
3GB for £15 - Same rules as the £10 bundle

To let you know, we changed the title, so it is easier for any of our members who are able to offer support to pinpoint what questions are been asked, its nothing to do with spelling, thankfully as mine is rubbish.

Also we do work on a first come first served basis, and we always answer as soon as possible.

If you have any further questions please let us know :D

Thanks for your feedback guys.

Two final questions to help me make my decision:

1. When you talk about, for example, a 1.5Gb bundle for £10. Is that £10 per month on top of the standard iPhone monthly charges or is it a one-off £10 charge?

2. If I use this in Spain, does the £9.99 per day roaming apply to the iPhone, the data bundle, neither or both separately?!

Thanks,

Stravonian

As my account is a business one (apparently) I was looking at the iPhone business plans. For example, the 32Gb iPhone 3GS on 24 month contract is £34.04 per month for 900 minutes and unlimited texts.

But it also says:

EXTRAS INCLUDED
1Gb mobile internet

It's on this page:

http://www.vodafonebusinessshop.co.uk/YourPricePlan.html

So is this telling me that this plan includes the 1Gb bundle that was mentioned by Martin above, that I could use to tether my PC or does the "1Gb mobile internet" extra refer to using the iPhone itself for the Internet?

Thanks again.

Hi Stravonian,

The tethering bundles are charged extra per month on top of your normal iPhone Price plan.

You can remove this at any time from the account, if you don't want the bundle you can also have use the tethering option and be billed £5 for every 500MB you use.

In regards to using this abroad, normal roaming charges will apply so if you do use this option, I would personally be careful as if you use this a lot it could become very costly.

Hi James

Thanks. So does the "1Gb mobile internet" extra mentioned in the business plan (see above) refer to tethering or is that just its name for the normal iPhone Internet access?

Lastly, when you say "costly" when using this abroad, do you mean the £9.99 per day per 50Mb roaming charge which is absolutely fine, or are you referring to something different?

Sorry for all the questions - almost there!

Hi Stravonian,

No need to apologise, its why we are here. :)

The 1GB Mobile internet refers to normal internet access for browsing on the phone, downloading Apps and Email etc.

As the tethering option uses a different Access Point (APN) it requires a seperate tethering bundle.

When refering to the international usage I was refering to the 9.99 per 24 hours. I personally always try to make customers aware of the charges as they can sometimes add up if you use this for a couple of days. as you are happy with this there arn't any issues.
