Mobile Broadband In City Of London

tonyledger
Not applicable
I have just purchased and installed Vodafone mobile broadband for use when I in the City of London. I am next to a window overlooking the large open space by the Bank of England yet I only get one bar on 3G and it keeps dropping out. According to Vodafone the City is very strong signal for 3G. Anyone else getting these problems or suggest what I do? I've tried ringing customer services, appalling, ended up being put back to the menu to start all over again so didn't!

Hi TonyL,

Welcome to the eForum :) I'm sorry to hear you're having connectivity issues with your Mobile Broadband but you've come to the right place and I'm confident we can resolve this. So I can look into this further for you would you mind providing the post code where you are having 3G signal problems in London?

Once I get this I can check the coverage and health of the local transceivers.

Look forward to hearing from you.

The problem in any city environment is that you get reflections of the signal from the buildings, this reduces the quality which can affect 3g signals.. you might find a mast is behind the building youre in, but with all the steel & concrete, it reduces the signal level..

Hi TonyL

Thanks for your post back, I've checked your postcode and there doesn't seem to be any problems with your particular area, only the one thing we cannot factor and that is the building you are in.

There are a couple of things you can do to improve signal :-

Move closer to the Window
Use a USB extension cable and put the modem closer to the window.
Try different parts of the building/room

Please let us know how you get on and if you have any more questions just let us know and we'll be more than happy to help you further

Thanks

Hi Wayne

I'd already done all of those things but the signal is only one bar wherever I am in the building and however close to a window I am. A colleague with a Three 3G modem right next to me gets 3-4 bars consistently.

Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony,

Unfortunately there are so many variables to consider when factoring in indoor signal strength, that we cannot always account for all eventualities - such as being in the shadow of a building with re-inforced walls and steel re-enforcements (I would imagine the Bank of England has plenty of these!).

If you get good signal in other areas, we can safely put this down to a pure coverage issue, which I'm afraid we really can't help you with.
If you're within the first 7 days of using your modem, we do allow for cancellations citing lack of coverage, so this may be an option available to you. We certainly don't want to lose you as a customer, but it also does us no good to have an unhappy customer tied into a contract with us if they're not going to be able to use our service :(
