Solution

Mobile Broadband Sim In Wm6.1 Phone?

linoc

Hi,

My first post in this forum, so I hope have the correct place.

I have Vodafones's 1Gb pay as you go Mobile Broadband using the E160X USB dongle - all works fine, I am very happy with it.

However I now also have a phone which is 3G capable (Acer DX900 - Windows Mobile 6.1), and would very much like to be able to occasionally access broadband through this device instead of through my laptop by placing the SIM from the dongle in my phone.

Is this feasible and/or allowed, and if so where can I find some settings to configure the phone.

Many thanks in advance,

Colin

I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to do it.
I know you can usually put the sim in a phone to test the internet is working, so I guess it would work the same way. You're still using data after all, regardless of what you use it in>
The agreement covers you for the data you use, not the equipment.

I shouldn't think you'd need to change any settings either, as long as the phone already has it's normal internet settings configured.

Unfortunately, the phone does not have any settings for Vodafone (I bought it sim free).

I also cannot see any reason why I shouldn't be able to this, but need the Vodafone access settings to try to get it to work. Since posting I managed to find this article:

I have tried these, but get a 'cannot connect for unknown reason'.....

Cheers,
Colin

Can you give me the phone details please (make and model)? I should be able to find the correct settings for you.

The phone is an Acer DX900 (also out there as an Eten branded model before Acer bought them) running WM6.1. I suspect from the support link I posted earlier that some tweak to my account may be necessary to allow me in..... (it is a pay as you go account, which looks like it needs a different access point name etc.)

Many thanks for your help,
Colin

Okay, you may have to bear with me a little on this one.
I'll need to find the apn if I can, and also the specific settings on the Acer which means going through Acer themselves.
I'm just about to leave work so if I cannot do it this evening when I get home (and Vodafone don't get there before me) you'll have an answer by tomorrow.

Let me know if you get it sorted beforehand anyway!

So far I have followed the instructions from the support page I linked to earlier - for pay as you go it gave pp.vodafone.co.uk as the APN, it was this that gave me the 'cannot connect for unknown reason' messge.

Thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin,

you should be fine to access the internet in your handset using the same SIM, but it won't be set up for voice calls ;)

We don't have a specific guide to set your handste up, so I've added a generic WM6.1 set up below, just pick out what you need :D

1. From the main display Tap the Start tab.
2. Tap on Settings.
3. Tap the Connections Tab at the bottom of the Screen.
4. Tap on Connections Icon.
5. Tap on the Advanced Tab
6. Tap Select Networks
7. Under the top drop-down box tap New…
8. Enter My Gprs as the name
9. Tap the Modem Tab, and then tap New…
9a. Under My Gprs tap Add a new modem Connection.
10. In the Enter a name for the connection in the box, Enter Vodafone INT.
11. In the Select a modem Box, tap the Arrow icon, Tap Cellular line (GPRS, 3G).
12. Tap Next.
13. In the Access point name Box, and enter:
If you are a Pay monthly customer: internet
If you are a Pay as you talk customer: pp.vodafone.co.uk
14. Tap Next.
15. In the User Name Box, and enter web
16. In the password Box, and enter web
17. The Domain should be left blank
18. Tap Finish.
19. Tap OK in the top right hand corner of the screen.
20. Now it should say My Gprs in the top drop-down box, tap ok.
21. Tap the Tasks tab,and it should now say My Gprs in black at the top of the screen,Tap
Ok.

Thanks for the reply Paul. I worked throught the set-up as described - I have a top and go account so used the pp.vodafone.co.uk as the apn.

I have just one very minor difference, I have 'cellular line (GPRS)' rather than 'celluar line (GPRS, 3G)' otherwise everything else is as you suggest, and all settings are accepted happily.

When I try to connect, the phone signal icon switches briefly to a GPRS connection icon then back to phone signal, and I get an error message:

Dialed: pp.vodafone.co.uk
Cannot connect for an unkown reason

I get this message whether I try to connect directly from within the connection page, or if a program (Outlook or IE) attempts to connect automatically.

The support help at:

<>

seems to suggest the account may need the APN added via customer services - I am not sure if this is relevant?

Thanks again for your help,
Colin

Hi Colin,

I'm really glad to hear those settings were accepted by your Acer. You're on the right line it is APN-related. Try changing it from pp.vodafone.co.uk to pp.internet. Also add the username web and password web. This is because your Mobile Broadband account will be set to access pp.internet only which is why you're not able to connect :)
