Mobile broadband SIM for my tablet

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi there.

I have the new Google (Asus) Nexus 7 tablet with 3G capability and put one of the Vodafone tablet free SIMs (micro SIM) into it as it is network unlocked.

However, I've followed the instructions on the Vodafone info with the SIM up to the point about opening up a browser and going to http://www.vodafone.co.uk/mmbtopup.  However, the tablet just refuses to do anything saying there is no internet connection.  I've gone into the internet settings and it seems to have picked up the APN settings correctly from the SIM, I'm getting a strong mobile signal on the indicator at the top of the screen, but no joy connecting to the network.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Hello,

It might be worth trying:

APN: smart

username: web

Password: web

Also, what colour is the sim, is it red or white?

If it's a pay as you go sim then you'll need to have some credit or data allowance on it. If you don't have this you should be able to connec tbut will be redirected to a top up page when trying to browse the web. It doesn't sound like this is the issue you have, but if this happens then you will need to top up.

Hope that helps.

Hi scottishstu8,

Can you confirm the APN settings that you’re using? The Nexus 7 isn’t a device we range, so the generic settings we have are:-

APN: internet

Username: web

Password: web

Do these match the ones on your device? If not can you update them to match the ones above and try to access the internet again.

Let us know how you go on.

Thanks

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your reply.  I've tried the settings you've offered for use with the free tablet PAYG micro SIM but unfortunately I can't get connected to the internet, despite a strong signals shown on the indicator.

Out of curiosity, I tried a friend's iPhone 4's micro SIM card in my Nexus 7 - which is on the Vodafone Simply PAYG plan - and it works with the settings "pp.vodafone.co.uk", wap, wap.

However my free sim (described previously) won't work on any of the settings offered "pp.vodafone.co.uk" wap, wap or "wap.vodafone.co.uk" wap, wap or those you've just offered above, "internet" web, web. An issue with the SIM maybe?  Thanks again for your help.

Hi headcheese,

Thanks for your help!  It is a red mobile BB sim that I have.  I tried the "smart", "web", "web" settings you offered and these worked!  I was able to bring up the Vodafone Top Up page and have now topped up and am able to surf using the 3G on my Nexus 7!

Thanks very much for your help!  V. happy here  :Smiling:

Hi I have posted today 15/5/13 as sim problem but I am not a techy and do not know how to find those settings. Some low tech advice would be good

Hi,

We can probably sort you out with the advice that you need, but to be able to do we'd need to know what it is that you're putting the sim in, what you're wanting to do, and what's fialing.

If you could let us know we'll see what we can do.

Cheers
