I have performed a complete factory wipe and cache clear before being asked to do that.
My issues.
Battery life, you can pretty much watch the battery percentage dropping down while the phone is in use, the only way I have found around that is to enable power saver mode (not ultra)

My Contacts apparently keeps crashing.

My messages app keeps seeming to glitch and loose all messages and make me unable to text without rebooting the phone.

The phone becomes slow then completely unresponsive and starts heating up, so I have to do a battery pull to get it to work again.

I had no issues with the phone at all until I did the OTA update.

So is there anything I can do myself to sort it?

I would like to fix the issues but I am getting an s6 edge next week so hopefully that will work 😛

Samsung devices often need a factory reset after a firmware update.   This clears out any bits of the old code that are hanging round in the system cache and confusing it.  Normal operation should be restored afterwards.   Don't forget to back up your content and make sure your contacts and calendar are fully sync'd first.  It's also a good idea to make a note of your homescreen layouts.

It may also help to restart the phone before doing the update, just to clear out appp caches and running processes, though it's too late for that in this case.

already done as stated in my first line of comment 😛
It seemed to initially work (except the battery) but all the issues returned shortly after which seems to be the usual effect of a reboot for about 5 minutes then it messes up 😕

Your best option, in that case, would be a Samsung repair centre.  With luck, a simple re-flash fo the OS will fix it.
