My sure signal still seems to think I live 50 miles away

bluerst
4: Newbie

We moved about a year ago, and yet when at home using my sure signal then it often seems to think I'm still at my old address, which is about 50 miles aeay.

Google now is telling me I'm 53 mins from home and the weather for my old home.

Help, it's frustrating.

Hi bluerst,

This is a strange one.

When you moved, did you update the address details on your Sure Signal registration?

Also, when you use Google is this with Wi-Fi connected because this would pick this up through your internet provider or the phones GPS?

James

Hi James

yes i updated the details on the dashboard, and the device still thought I was were I used to be, and I've since changed to a different postcode (we live at the edge of 2) to see if that changed matters.

At home, I log into the sure signal, and wifi, but the gps is almost always off at home.

Happy to check with myp, but thought it would be the phone as I thought it said somewhere that the location needed to correct for emergency services??

Hi bluerst,

Thanks for getting back to us.

It’s very unusual that your phone’s GPS is still showing a different location even when you’re at home.

If you can post your Sure Signal serial number please, we can resync it to see if that solves things for you.

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi,

I don't typically havethe gps on home, when I do it shows the correct location. This is about when I don't have gps on, and it's taking it's location either from the sure signal, or from my isp?? I don't understand how that works, I understand that the phone thinks it's near the tower it uses, in this case my sure signal, which is why I assumed it was that that was creating the error. Resyncing sounds good.

The serial number is 40111058109

Hi bluerst,

Thanks for your post.

Basically if you don’t have GPS switched on then it will take the reading form the Sure Signal.

Due to how this routes through the network it will give the coordinates of the local MSE (Mobile Switch Exchange) rather than your home location which is why the registration of the Sure Signal is so important.

Unfortunately the only way to get a proper reading is to have GPS active on your phone.

James

Hi James,

thanks, thats interesting to how it works, but unless the only local mse happens to be were I used to live (which would be somewhat of a co-incidence) then there still appears to be an possible issue with where the sure signal thinks I am.

Will the resyncing from your end help with that?

Regards,

Nigel

Hi bluerst,

A resync can help to clear up any conflicts so it may help in this case. I've just done one now so you'll need to reset.

For Sure Signal version 1 or 2:

  • Hold down the reset button until all the lights show (about 30 seconds)
  • Keeping the reset button held down, remove then re-insert the power lead.
  • Once all lights display release the reset button.
  • The Sure Signal will come online in around 1 hour.

For Sure Signal version 3:

  • Locate the button on the base of the box next to the Ethernet ports.
  • Press and hold the button for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Once the lights come back on, release the button.
  • The Sure Signal will come online in around 1 hour.

Failing this, can you try updating the registered postcode to a different address, waiting about 30 minutes then changing it back? This will force the system to recognise and roll out any changes. Again, it may just be one of those things down to the nature of networks, but we're happy to give it a go.

Dave

Hi,

this still isn't recognising where I live.

with flight mode enabled and wifi on the phone knows I'm at home, with wifi off, and flight mode off it thinks I'm 50 miles away.

I've just tried changing the postcode again to a different location again, but so far the phone still thinks I'm at my old home??

changing the postcode to a Liverpool address and back to a Lancaster one has convinced my phone that I live in Barnsley!

There surely must be a solution, even if it's to wipe the history and let me re-register from scratch?
