Solution

Need Dial Up Network Settings For Xp 64 Bit

Hi,

I've just got myself a brand new Dell E6400 laptop with a built in 3G modem!

It works fine in Ubuntu 9.10 with the Vodafone network, but my main OS is XP 64 bit (It has 8GB of RAM, so I need 64 bit)

I tried installing vmc, but it complained about administrator access even though my account is a member of local admins.

On an old laptop with Windows 2003 I got this working with dial up networking, but I'm having trouble getting this going on XP 64 bit.

Does anyone know what dial up networking settings would work?

I get ppp link terminated when I try to connect.

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the eForum :) I've got a couple Dells myself but I'm not lucky enough to have 3G modems in them. With regards to Vodafone Mobile Connect I believe you can right-click on the application and click Run as administrator. I know this option exists in Windows Vista so this may work around the error message you're getting despite being the administrator already. However, judging by the Read Me file from the latest version of VMC 9.4.3 I cannot guarantee XP 64-bit is supported. It's definitely worth downloading the latest version if you don't already have this.

The good news is I have the following instructions for setting up a connection through Dial Up Connection (DUP):

1. Go to Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, select Modems Tab
2. Highlight the VMC device installed and select properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab and enter AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”internet” in the Extra Initialisation Command field.
4. Click Apply and OK to save changes

DUN Settings for Windows:

1. Go to Start Menu / Control Panel / Network Connections / Create a new Connection
2. Choose "Connect to the Internet"
3. Select "Set up my Connection Manually"
4. Select "Connect Using Dial-up Modem"
5. Ensure the VMC Device is selected/ticked (and nothing else).
6. ISP Name = "Connection Name", (call it anything you like).
7. Enter the Phone number: *99***1#
8. Username & Password = web & web
9. Click "Finish" to complete.

Let me know how you get on with these :)

Thanks,

Adam

Hi.

I have XP 64-bit (x64) operating system.

Here is the solution to launch vodafone modem on XP x64 system (I think it also possible on vista x64 and w7) and shift the "Administrative privileges" error.

My modem is Vodafone (huawei) K3520 (e169). I think, other modems are supported too.

Before You start, CALL YOUR LOCAL OPERATOR to get the user name and phone number of connection or prepare it, if You have :-).

For vodafone/bite Latvia they are:
*99#
internet

Sequence of operations:

1. Insert your stick in free usb port. Cancel autoload of installer or click OK on error message.
2. Your vodafone stick will be recognized as USB mass storage device.
3. Download and extract drivers (for manual install, istead of vodafone mobile connect).
Follow the link: http://rapidshare.com/files/98165936/huawe...0_XP64.zip.html
4. Right-click on "my computer" and select "properties" tab (or press WIN+break buttons instead).
5. In opened window select the "Hardware" tab and press "Device Manager" button in it.
6. Go to "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and expand it.
7. Explore only "USB Mass Storage Devices" and find the right one (double click on them or right-click+properties) - in "general" tab "location" line must contain "Huawei Mobile" or smth. like that.
8. In correct one, go to the "Driver" tab and press "Uninstall" button below.
9. After uninstalling, XP tries to reboot your vodafone stick, and in "Device Manager" windows You will see new group of unrecognized devices, marked with yellow question marks (in my case, there was huawei 3G modem + 4 data ports)
10. Double click on line containing "3G" or something like that, and in opened window press "Reinstall Driver..." button.
11. Select "No, not this time" in internet connection advice window, and "Install from a specific location" in the next window. Then, mark the "Include this location in the search" and hit Browse to select previously downloaded driver folder (step 3.). Press Next and Finish.
12. Complete step 10-11 for other Yellow question marks lines related to 3G modem group.

13. After that. Go to "My Computer", "Control Panel", "Network Connections" and in folder network tasks (left menu) press "Create a new connection".
14. In new window hit next, then next ("connect to the internet" radio button checked), then "Set up my connection manually", "Connect, using a dial-up modem". Input ISP name (any) and hit next, phone number (Call your local operator or input it here) and hit next.
Get "Username" from your local operator, but password is your Vodafone stick sim PIN. Check/uncheck options below and hit next/finish.
15. Now You have connection configured and can start it from desktop or "network connection" folder.

Thanks Adam,

I've added the line in, but I still get PPP link terminated.

I added the AT+CGDCONT=1,"ip","internet" line to the initialisation for the modem.

I get Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated

I've tried all of the suggestions that Windows provides.

Any Ideas?

Mark.

Hello Mark

Thanks for getting back to us, I'm afraid we have problems trying to get this working on the 64-bit version of windows, as mentioned Adam's solution is a known fit for 32-bit Windows.

Have you considered Mailsent's detailed fix as this seems like the only other alternative, :(

Thanks
