Playing Games Online

Hey, im using a usb mobile modem and trying to play a game of age of empires II online. Im fairly sure its some issue related to the vmc modem but i cant resolve it on my own. Ive tried using a method i found in this forum where you unistall the vmc program and just dial up to connect to the internet, but when i uninstalled it and tried to dial up, i got an error saying the modem was either missing or busy. (although i didnt restart my computer).

Ive also heard that if your default gateway ip address begins with 10. which mine does, then theres some ip firewall in place by the provider that prevents access from other peoples connections.

My EXACT problem, although mybe irrelevant, is when i enter the ip adress of a hosts game- i hit enter and nothing appears in the box for the game being hosted on that ip.

This is all puzzling as im able to play a game called soldat, online, and it connects perfectly with other players.

Its just age of empires 2 AOC, which granted is an old game, but it plays fine with cabled or wireless router connection.

Any help and advice would be kind. Thanks.

Hi there,

I have experienced a very similar issue in the past with mobile broadband as well. Unable to play games online, such as Evony or quake live on laptop through dongle. Would one of the mods be able to confirm if this is just simply something we are not allowed to do because we can't get credit to setup Pay Monthly plans, or is there some sort of settings that need to be changed to do this?

Apologies if this post is in the wrong place, just seemed that the original post was related to my query.

Any one who can shed light on either query?

Would be much appreciated
And never forget...what was i talking about?

Current handset : Nokia e71 running F/W 300.21.012

I honestly wouldn't expect Evony to be affected, since that's a browser game, but Quake Live would certainly be resolved using the above suggestion.

Can you give any more information on the kind of errors that Evony is giving you?

To overcome this issue, what you'll need is zero-config VPN Client like Hamachi. Everyone you want to play with will need to have it installed and logged in to work. Basically what Hamachi does is creates a new Local Area Network, but across the internet. Everyone logged in to your Hamachi Group will act just as if they are all connected to the same local network, with their own local IP addresses.

Hey Jon, thanks for your informative reply! I was aware of that form of IP sharing so it comes as little surprise that its that which is causing this.

Well i wanted to play against random fellow AOE enthusiasts (yes there is still a large community of players!) so this solution isnt really practical for that. Ah well, guess ill have to start doing things that are more constructive for the moment!

Thanks loads for your help
