Solution

Problem With K3565 Stick And Vmc Software

I have a couple of problems with the VMC software and getting the K3565-Z stick to work properly on my new Dell laptop. The laptop is 24hrs old and VMC is the 1st software I've installed on it. It came of course with the normal software installed by Dell, i.e. Vista Home Premium, MS Works, McCaffee Security Centre, Dell Utilities ect.

Installing VMC Lite 9.3.6 from the USB stick caused a Windows Installer Error 1722 and the installation was aborted and reversed. So I downloaded the latest VMC 9.3.6 from the Vodafone Support website and installed that instead. Installation appeared to complete successfully, the usb modem was recognised and installed as was the secondary mass storage controller (I assume this is for the SD memory card slot). I entered the correct number to dial (in this case it is *99#) and connection was successful. Access to the WWW was no problem.

Restarting my PC the next day, when arriving at my desktop I received an error message "BTTRAY.EXE failed to initialise." I am told this is the software that manages the connections for my built-in Bluetooth adapter. Connecting to the wireless broadband network also failed. Checking the device manager I found that the USB Modem device was no longer present. Unplugging and replugging the USB stick did not help. It would only recognise the stick as a storage unit and I could only access the directory with the VMC Lite 9.3.6 setup file.

After much uninstalling and reinstalling VMC 9.3.6 and much trial and error, I have found the following:

1. Uninstalling VMC 9.3.6 causes the 'BTTRAY.EXE' error message to not pop up anymore when logging in. Reinstall VMC and the message pops up everytime I login.

2. Uninstall and reinstall VMC 9.3.6 brings the K3565 modem back. The modem is recognised again on COM6 as is the 2nd storage controller for the SD card. The directory with VMC Lite setup file is also visible, as are the 3 or 4 other devices installed by VMC, under 'Ports (COM & LPT)' in the Device Manager. If I unplug the stick, it will no longer be recognised by Vista again the next time I plug it in. Trying different USB ports also does not help. Restarting the laptop with or without the stick plugged in also doesn't help. Only the directory with the VMC Lite setup file is accessible. I have to uninstall and reinstall VMC 9.3.6 to get Vista to recognise that the stick is more than just a thumbdrive. Putting the laptop into sleep mode also causes the modem device to dissappear and a VMC reinstall is required.

Would appreciate any assistance

Vista version: Home Premium with SP2
Age of K3565-Z stick: New

Hey Alfiean, and welcome to the eForum! B-)

Shame to see you've joined us under such circustances, but we'll do our best to help out based on the fantastically detailed post you've provided above.

Before we start though, I will say that we're not Microsoft Training Accredited, so any PC-specific suggestions made delving deeper into Window's underbelly will be out of experience, and should be followed at your own risk. This isn't to say we bumble through information, but just to backup in case something goes wrong as we're not legally liable.

From what you've said, my initial reaction is that Vista is making real mess out of VMC 9.3.6... can you try uninstalling it and loading an earlier version? Check out our VMC Drivers page, perhaps maybe start with 9.3.3? We keep these publically available because we know that they can resolve some compatibility issues.

Other than this, have you tried assigning it another port value? This can be done from Device Manager, by right clicking the modem entries and assigning an alternate virtual port number. There may be a conflict in progress

Let us know how you get on! I'm sure one of the community will drop by to lend their expertise soon, too.

I never got VMC to work on that Dell Studio15 laptop. The stick tests fine everywhere else. Even a clean new install of Vista did not help. I have since begun the process of exchanging the laptop with Dell for a different model!

ALfiean,

I have encountered exactly the same problem, but did get the dongle to work briefly, but that was with a total re-install of vista and before I updated windows. Once that happened and basic drivers back on it all went back to not seeing device.

I however am quite reluctant to change from my studio 1555 as quite happy with it except for this.

How did you manage to change laptop as mine is still only once week old.

Dell's return policy here in 14 days from date of receiving the laptop, so returning it is no problem. I am in Malaysia

I also have this problem with a Dell studio XPS 13. error 1722 during installation. If i download and install VMC it installs ok but won't open when i double click the shortcut. Seems to be a Dell problem.

Hi mrtom84,

Have you managed to try the device in a different laptop?

If you could let me know, we should be able to diagnose!!

Cheers,

Yes I have tried it and it works fine in other laptops.
2 other points.
1) I have tried a second K3565 (REV2) in my laptop and it has the same error 1722 when installing.
2) The older E172 works fine in my Laptop running VMCLite V3.2.2.182

Hi guys,

We're starting to hear increasing examples of people with Dell Studio laptops experiencing this problem, so I'm going to investigate with our Tech Team on Monday to see if they've come across any fixes yet.

In the meantime, if you have access to another computer, you can install Vodafone Mobile Connect on there, and then simply copy the Vodafone folder in Program Files across to your Dell Studio laptop. This will fool your comptuer into thinking VMC is fully installed, and should therefore skip the 1722 error.

If I find any more solutions next week, I'll keep you updated :)
