Solution

Problem With K3565 Stick And Vmc Software

I have a couple of problems with the VMC software and getting the K3565-Z stick to work properly on my new Dell laptop. The laptop is 24hrs old and VMC is the 1st software I've installed on it. It came of course with the normal software installed by Dell, i.e. Vista Home Premium, MS Works, McCaffee Security Centre, Dell Utilities ect.

Installing VMC Lite 9.3.6 from the USB stick caused a Windows Installer Error 1722 and the installation was aborted and reversed. So I downloaded the latest VMC 9.3.6 from the Vodafone Support website and installed that instead. Installation appeared to complete successfully, the usb modem was recognised and installed as was the secondary mass storage controller (I assume this is for the SD memory card slot). I entered the correct number to dial (in this case it is *99#) and connection was successful. Access to the WWW was no problem.

Restarting my PC the next day, when arriving at my desktop I received an error message "BTTRAY.EXE failed to initialise." I am told this is the software that manages the connections for my built-in Bluetooth adapter. Connecting to the wireless broadband network also failed. Checking the device manager I found that the USB Modem device was no longer present. Unplugging and replugging the USB stick did not help. It would only recognise the stick as a storage unit and I could only access the directory with the VMC Lite 9.3.6 setup file.

After much uninstalling and reinstalling VMC 9.3.6 and much trial and error, I have found the following:

1. Uninstalling VMC 9.3.6 causes the 'BTTRAY.EXE' error message to not pop up anymore when logging in. Reinstall VMC and the message pops up everytime I login.

2. Uninstall and reinstall VMC 9.3.6 brings the K3565 modem back. The modem is recognised again on COM6 as is the 2nd storage controller for the SD card. The directory with VMC Lite setup file is also visible, as are the 3 or 4 other devices installed by VMC, under 'Ports (COM & LPT)' in the Device Manager. If I unplug the stick, it will no longer be recognised by Vista again the next time I plug it in. Trying different USB ports also does not help. Restarting the laptop with or without the stick plugged in also doesn't help. Only the directory with the VMC Lite setup file is accessible. I have to uninstall and reinstall VMC 9.3.6 to get Vista to recognise that the stick is more than just a thumbdrive. Putting the laptop into sleep mode also causes the modem device to dissappear and a VMC reinstall is required.

Would appreciate any assistance

Vista version: Home Premium with SP2
Age of K3565-Z stick: New

Hi guys,

We're starting to hear increasing examples of people with Dell Studio laptops experiencing this problem, so I'm going to investigate with our Tech Team on Monday to see if they've come across any fixes yet.

In the meantime, if you have access to another computer, you can install Vodafone Mobile Connect on there, and then simply copy the Vodafone folder in Program Files across to your Dell Studio laptop. This will fool your comptuer into thinking VMC is fully installed, and should therefore skip the 1722 error.

If I find any more solutions next week, I'll keep you updated :)

Thankyou for the update. I have tried the above, and when clicking on the .exe nothing happens. The computer doesn't freeze, the VMC program just doesn't open.

I've just heard back from one of our modem specialists, who have suggested the following:

- Click on Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories
- Right-click "Command Prompt"
- Select "Run as Administrator"
- At the prompt type regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll and hit return
- Retry installing the Mobile Connect Software

Further to this, the other option that can resolve this is to update/reinstall the Microsoft Installer as follows:

Let me know if this resolves or not.

Sorry to say neither worked. The first reccomendation you suggested made no difference, and the same error popped up. With the second suggestion, I try installing windows update 4.5 and it tells me this update does not apply to your system. I assume i have the right version. the file name is windows6.0-kb942288-v2-x86.msu.

Hi Mrtom84

We're treading carefully as the type of support we can offer does not allow us to advise any further updating or configuring of your windows system, it is, however, obvious that this is some sort of system compatibility problem.

I’m afraid we'll have to open the floor t any other user suggestions, particularly those (if any0 who've successfully diagnosed the problem and resolved it, :(

Thanks
