I've noticed that on some mobile broadband tariffs, vodafone provide a "professional usb modem" as standard.
Does anyone know what the advantages of this modem is over the presumably non-professional usb modems?!

Pro models UPTO 7.2 Mbps.
Standard UPTO 3.6Mbps
Subject to location/signal available.

Actually this is a bit out of date. The current standard modem is the K3765 which is 7.2Mbps download and 5.7 upload (Voda max upload is 2.1 at the moment though).
The Pro is now the K4505 which is a far higher spec than anything ever sold before as it's HSPA+ capable with downloads up to 21.6 (and because it already has the hardware for MIMO capable of 28.8 with a future firmware upgrade). Even without HSPA+ which Voda will have later this year, unlike the standard modem it's capable of using the existing 14.4Mbps downloads to full effect. It's also quad band 3G (the standard is only dual band).
Even at the moment, in the right areas, speeds with the K4505 are very impressive on 3G. Unfortunately all the ones I've used have had problems with 2G if the signal isn't so good.

Thanks for the additional info. Unfortunately it looks like I'm stuck with my K3520 on my renewed reduced rate tariff. They wanted £50 for a 7.2 capable modem!!

Forgot to add that I've got an unused HUAWEI E160 O2 modem. Is it worth even investigating whether I can unlock this and gain superior speeds or should I give up now and just mope instead?

Your K3520 is faster. The E160 is only 3.6 capable. A version of this modem is sold by Vodafone as the K3565 for pay as you go. However as I mentioned before, it may not be the equipment that limits your speed.
