S4 Memory

DeanH

After having my S4 for several months, I found out over the weekend that the memory on the 16Gig handset is very poor and only gives you 9 Gig usable memory.

I am very disapointed with this, yes you can put sd card in to increase the memory but you can't move thee apps onto the card, well hardly any. i have all my photos on the card as it is and music is all via spotify.

What is it that is using the space on the handset and is there any way this can be increased, surley these should not be sold as 16g if only 9 is available.

Are all handsets going this way or are Samsung the only ones?

Hi there, I think its just the amount of memory used by the system and there isn't much that can be done about it. Manufacturers should specify the amount of memory available more clearly so customers can see what they are getting up front without having to delve into things to find out.

I don't think its just Samsung though, I think most of them do it.

This is the first phone I have had where I have been told I am running out of memeory, the frustrating thing is that you can't seem to move any of the apps.

Hi DeanH

As 63johnw has already mentioned the missing 7GB is due to the Android System and Samsungs "Add-Ons" such as S-Apps.

Android typically uses approx 2GB of internal storage.

Samsung then add all their fancy extra's such as their Launcher (user interface) TouchWiz, which is incredibly bloated with additional features and built in applications.

Then of course there will be a few Apps from Vodafone as well.

As you've noticed, all of a sudden you have very little space left!

I agree with John, Manufacturers should be clearer on what is actually "usable" storage!

You can set the Camera to automatically Save photos to the external memory card. If you don't have an ext-card you can use Google+ to auto backup your Pics to the Cloud. You can then safely delete the images from the phne, saving you space!

Yeah, you used to be able to move apps but that was taken away in the android updates.

As TSD says the best thing to do is used cloud services or use a large capacity SD card and save photos, music and whatever you can to that.

Thanks for the feedbank everyone, just venting my frustration really, I do have a memeory card in which my photos are stoed on.

I do think that providors should say what useable memory the handsets have.

Looks like I'm stuck with this until my upgrade in April.
