After the update my phone is a bundle of scrap. It freezes, does random things; can't hold a wifi connection and can drain a battery in 12 hours standby.
I tried a soft reset which didn't help. I have now carried out a factory reset.
Phone still a bundle of scrap.

As an update 20% power lost in last hour and a half. Vodafone say they tailor the firmware so I assume they will accept responsibility.

You can almost certainly fix the issue with a factory reset. Don't forget to back up your content and make sure your contacts and calendar are fulyl sync'd first. Data form the old system can get left behind in the cache after an update, confusing the system and leading to the behaviour you describe.

Thank you for the suggestion but as I stated I carried out a factory reset and was no better off.
As an aside, I have an issue with the casual approach to factory resets. They take a lot of the users time which is unacceptable on a new phone ruined by an update provided by Vodafone. If I have a problem with my car BMW take it away and fix it. They don't supply me with instructions to do it myself. Perhaps Vodafone should learn.
I also note that nobody from Vodafone has helped me on this post. Again, poor customer service.

For some reason, Samsung devices seem particularly prone to issues with old code hanging round after an update and causing problems like this. It's not universal, though, and may have something to do with the memory state at the time the update is performed. It's also possible that it affects OTA updates more than ones performed via Kies - on OTA all the work has to be done by the phone.
I haven't done it un-reset myself. but a couple of things to check would be:
1) Storage space. Do you have enough for the download and any working space? (Yes, the process should check that, but it maay be marginal.)
2). RAM. If the phone has been on a long time, apps will have built up caches and have running processes. At the very least, I'd do a restart to clear that before updating.
I don't know whether that would be enough, but it would be nice to be able to have a route to suggest that minimises problems.
I agree that a reset is a pain, but if it's the only solution, it's the only solution. If you go down the repair route, it'll be part of the process, so backing up is still essential and it'll also be necessary to set the device up again.

Reset isn't just a pain, it's unacceptable that Vodafone have put me in this position because of their download.

There's been some excellent advice from @hrym and if you'd like us to take a look in our Repair Centre, we'll be happy to do so.
To find out what you need to do in order to get this sorted, take a look at our Vodafone repairs thread.

I appreciate your comments but they do raise some issues with me.
I don't believe that the harware is the issue. The phone was fine before the android update.
The fact that so many people have had the same issue suggests that the update is the problem.
And as I pay Vodafone every month for a phone and service why should I be without a phone brecause of your defective update.

And three further points for Vodafone.
Read the sale of goods and servives legislation.
Second based on your customer services I will be leaving at the end of my conract.
Thirdly I believe that your failure to provide the services I have entered into a contract for is sufficient to frustrate the contract between us. I reject the phone and contract and would appreciate your views on how I may end my contract with you. I await our response by return.
