I’ve not experienced drops on my Samsung phone @peterdcgreen
You could also checking with your car dealership to see if they know of any issues.
To test the SIM card you could try inserting it into another phone.
It’s possible network connection / signal might be an issue ?

Bluetooth in cars is a can of worms. It's something car makers tend to fit and forget without paying much attention to and their implementation is often quite old and maybe idiosyncratic. It tends either to work or not work. The usual suggestion is to make sure your car's software is up to date although, tbh, that doesn't often make a difference.
Two questions:
What make of car are we talking about?
Do you get the problem is all vehicles (can you check?) or just the one?

Car is 3 year old mini, mini recently updated software during service. Also have connectivity problem to new Toyota.

Bit of a long shot, but you could try looking at Running Processes on the phone and see if there's any cache or data that you can clear there, or stop the process and let it restart.
BT problems are usually at the car end, tbh. Has the connection ever worked? (ie has something happened, or been updated, that's introduced the problem?)
Issues often seem to relate to the hand-back after calling. What about media playback - does that work?
