Solution

Samsung NC10 - Usb Dongle Problems

ciderapple

Hi

I've had a look through recent topics, including one on the NC 10, but could not work out if any or them related to my problem.

I have great 3G coverage and previously had a White Vodafone 3G USB Pay as You Go dongle working great on the NC10. I then lost the the dongle so have just replaced it with a new one on pay monthly. As far as I know both dongles were the same. The new one is the White USB type, model K3520-Z ZTE Proprietary USB Modem Firmware BD_VDFP671M8V1.0.0B16.

The Samsung NC10 is using WindowsXP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

The new dongle is working fine on a different PC running Windows Vista.

I deleted and reinstalled the Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite software on the NC10. The Mobile Connect software was installed for the first time on the Vista PC.

The problem I have on the NC10 is that I get an error message reading as follows when I try to connect to 3G. The dongle's blue light is flashing and it looks as if it is picking up the network I just can't connect.

Error message = "Mobile connection not possible. Ensure that no other probrams are using your selected device, and try again in a short while."

I've tried to follow the trouble shooting suggestions in the Vodafone software troubleshooting menue, but they are a bit difficult to follow.

In device manager I tried disabling 2 USB Mass Storage Devices. If I disaled the USB Composite Device the dongle's blue light stopped flashing.

Any help would be very welcome!

Thank you for the suggestion. I followed it through, but it has not worked and I'm still getting the same error when I try to connect after the VMC software identifies the Vodafone UK 3G signal - "Mobile connection not possible. Ensure that no other programs are using your selected device, and try again in a short while."

Just as background. These are the steps I followed, as set out in the link to the thread Nev recommended.

To resolve this issue, you have to enable 3 disabled services and start each one manually:

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Double-click Services and Applications, and then double-click Services.
3. Right-click Telephony and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, click Manual next to Startup type.
5. On the General tab, click Start under Service status, and then click OK.
6. Repeat steps 3 - 5 for the Remote Access Connection Manager Service and for the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Service.

I found that Telephony and Remote Access Connection Manager Service were already enabled. The Remote Access Auto Connection Manger Service was not on manual, so I turned it on. I then rebooted, but still have the same problem.

The other thing I have subsequently done is try using a 3-mobile Dongle on the NC10 to see if the problem was nothing to to with Vodafone hardware or the VMC software. This 3-mobile Dongle is working fine on the NC10 - no problems connecting. It has not made any difference either way to the VMC connection, so the problem does seem to be related to using this particular Vodafone dongle on the NC10.

Further help from the Vodafone team would really be appreciated, as I have a 6 month contract on this new Vodafone USB stick and would like to be able to use it.

Hi Ciderapple,

It's possible that there is a compatibility issue between the K3520-Z and this particular netbook, especially as this particular modem is made by a different manufacturer than our other offerings.

I'm honestly out of ideas with regards to a fix, and would have to see if one of our modem experts can shed any light on the issue. In the meantime however, as a quick fix, I would recommend that you contact the point of sale - explain the issue - and see if they can exchange the modem for one of our other models as this should invariably cure the issue (we use the same modem as 3-mobile in same cases).

If you've not had the device long, this shouldn't be too much of a headache to organise, as we accept returns for good sold online or over the phone within 7 days.

Thanks for the response.

I think I received it 8 days ago. However, I would hope Vodafone would accept a return as I have spent several of those days trying to make it work and have notified customer services by e-mail about 5 days ago, although I'm yet to receive a response from them.

I ordered it online from the Vodaphone website. Do you have any recommendations on who to call with regard to exchanging it for a different model? I will get my paperwork out tomorrow.

Not wanting to hi jack this thread but before starting a fresh one...

I have just (TODAY) bought a usb vodafone topup and go dongle. I'm running it (trying to) on a DELL Inspiron 1525 laptop running Vista Ultimate.

I originally had same problem as others with VBScript, sorted via Voda help line. I am now getting the same problem as ciderapple.

I get the following message when trying to connect even though a signal is available,

-------------------------
Mobile connection not possible.

-Set your current mobile device as the default device in the "Manage Devices" view
-Ensure that no other programs are using your mobile device and try again in a short while
-Delete the device in the "Manage Devices" view, add it back again, and then try connecting.

If this error persists, please contact Support at your mobile network operator.

Support information:
RAS error code 31

--------------------------
Any other thoughts please as the guy at Voda support suggested and tried many things but to no avail.

I have tried it on my desktop XP PC and it installs and works fine..

Sorry to Ciderapple for sticking this on the end of the post but maybe it will give other ideas for people to fix both problems..

p.s I tried the bluetooth OFF/ON Wifi OFF/ON etc to no effect.

(I will try it on another Vista machine tommorrow which is running the HOME version)

Many thanks.. Phil

I'm getting the same message using K3565 dongle on XP OS.....very frustrating as Vodaphone don't appear to know why it is happening. As the problem is occuring on a range of computers this appears to be a Voda software problem, not something to conveniently blame on the hardware.

No problem with anyone else picking up this thread. On Jon's recommendation I rang the returns number and asked to exchange for another modem. Returns say they don't "repair" USB sticks, and the solution was to send my current stick back, cancel my contract and then start another contract as a different model USB stick might have a different price plan.

I'm nervous to order another stick & contract, as it looks like this is an ongoing problem and it might or might not affect any new model I order. So I'd be keen to see what other solutions come up on this forum.

5 HOURS LATER !!!!

Time line may be a bit out but I have got the Modem working "YES".....

Decided to try the "rarepair" I had seen mentioned several times during the evening whilst looking for a way to make the modem work..

It worked for me but if anyone tries it, at your own risk...

I made a restore point of before I first tried to install the modem. Doing this meant I had to re enter the fix for VBScript fix, the other problem I had...

I then tried to install the modem as before, still wouldn't connect. I have an old fashioned 56k modem in the Inspiron which I never use so I disabled that in "system".

I then decided that I would risk "rarepair". I turned off my wifi card (just in case it made any difference)

I went to control panel and uninstalled the Vodafone software for 20th time (or there abouts !)

I then ran rarepair as administrator, a dos type window opened, it did its stuff (technical term !) I then just hit ENTER as it told me to, the machine shut down and rebooted.

I decided to reboot again for good measure and then plugged the dongle in. It went through install routine. and the VMC window opened....

I didn't expect alot but I clicked on connect and it went through the connecting to Vodafone 3G but instead of the error 31 I had connected...

I used my usual speed checker site and got 2.1Mb download speed compared with my 4.3Mb broadband down my phone line... That will do for me...

Just though that I would post this so it can be seen that it is possible to get around the RAS error 31 issue...

For the moment anyway until someother piece of software makes a mess of it all again.
