I have an iPad Air on pay monthly, my upgrade is over a year away.
Can I trade it in for a different tablet ?

Hi there

You won't just be able to trade it in and get another device. You can however buy out the time remaining in your contract in order to bring your upgrade date forward.  Obviously you could sell your iPad to offset this cost.
