Unlocking Vodafone UK iPhone 4S to Vodafone Ireland?

Today I recieved an iPhone 4S, but it's locked to Vodafone UK and it won't activate with my Irish Vodafone sim. (I live in Ireland.) My problem is that when you request an unlocking code online from Vodafone UK, you have to give your phone number but mine won't work because it's not a UK number. I don't really want to get my phone unlocked anywhere else because of scams and all that, and I've tried ringing Vodafone but I can't get through to them. 

Any help would be appreciated!

Vodafone will not unlock the phone for anyone other than the original owner.

If you are unable to contact that person you need to take the matter up with the person who you received the phone from.

Where did you get this phone from? If it was supplied on contract, then only the original owner can get it unlocked.

It's pay as you go, but I got it from smartfonestore.com so there's no way to contact the original owner

Yeah, checked them out, and they do specify both whether it is licked or unlocked, and that they don't facilitate unlocking. Essentially, unless you're still within time to return it, you're stuck.
