I've received an unlock code and put in my verizon sim card but the phone never asked me for the code.

Yes, although it is currently suspended, which I suspect is the issue. Am I best just buying a sim from the pound shop and trying that?

It's worth a try, it will need to be an activated sim to try, it could be the phone is already unlocked.
