Usage Issue

Hi there

I am having problems analysing my usage from the vodafone dashboard.

I thought I was doing well, I do use the internet quite a bit and even watch stuff from bbc I player and channel 4, however since I've been using this service (january 09) I have kept within my usage limit which is 3Gb, at £15 per month, however only last month this went up substantially and I ended up paying £44 because I went over my limit of 3Gb. The software that I have did not warn me.

Now, correct me if I am wrong but isn't 1 gigabyte (Gb)equivalant to 1000 or 1024 mb or did I imagine this.

I had set my limit as soon as I had installed the software to 3000 mb however no warning came up anyway and my software doesn't seem to be working anyway because it does not seem to be consistent.

I watched the usage video and I'm still none the wiser. I look forward to some advice, honestly I need it because I've a horrible feeling I might go over again without realising it.

Much appreciated.

you are right in saying the 1GB is 1024 mb not 1000, but not sure how vodafone works its limiter on the software

Hi Vodaminx, welcome to the eForum!

You're both spot on here - it's 1024, not 1000. :)

It really is a matter of personal preference what the alert is set to - it's why we provide a variable alert setter...some people like a warning, some just want to know when they reach the limit - but I generally find it's better to set to approximately 2500 as this gives a good warning period and leaves more of a window for you to adjust your activity to temper your usage. Whilst the monitor is a good guide to the usage, it doesn't take into account system updates or Peer-to-Peer traffic, so if you are using any data for these purposes, then this will affect the accuracy of the monitor. Also, if you have used the dongle in multiple machiones, you would need to total the usage figures from each of them as the figure you see is stored on the computer and not on the dongle itself.

If you are registered for online billing through the My Account link on our website, you can also export the data usage to a spreadsheet and total up the individual sessions to get a record of what you have used, however with any usage this can be up to 72 hours behind as data is correlated.

To give a guide of what your usage is likely to be in any given month, you can also check out our online usage calculator - just enter the details of your approximate usage and the system will calculate roughly what you can expect to use.

I trust that helps, but if you have any other queries, please drop us a line!

Hi Dave

Thanks for getting back to me. Thing is I'm not sure how I should have set up my dashboard software, the version I'm using is 9.3.0.9237 and when I got it it didn't seem to be recording usage correctly. Also I'm not sure from what date I should be measuring my usage from and to, is it from the billing date, from the 1st of the month or which date is it (advice would be great )

As I'm on a 3Gb deal I know that's the same as 3000 mb and I've reset my settings to 2500 as per your advice, thing is I went over teh 3gb last month but did not get a warning to inform me of this so how do I ensure that the warning system is working as it certainly doesn't seem to be or else I would have reduced my usage. (advice again would be appreciated :D )

And . . . . another thing, I sometimes use 3G and sometimes use GPRS which is simply down to how the coverage is (can you advise on his as well :) ).

I've attached two pictures of the dashboard, on which I can clarify the information does not remain consistent in terms of keeping a record of accumulative usage.

Thanks for reading my rant. and I look forward to receiving any advice you have that may help me monitor my usage better.

Much appreciated.

Hi Carol

thanks for the screenshots, they always prove handy.

The dashboard usage monitor on the VMC shouldn't be used as a guide to your usage, it only records data passing through th software and does not connect to our actual billing service, as such figures may often be inacurate.

To monitor your usage always use Online Billing, (you'll need to know the mobile number of the sim in the modem to register).

To answer your question, whether you connect on 3G or GPRS is automatically determined by the availability of a 3G signal in whatever area you happen to be browsing from. :)

Thanks
