Solution

Usb Dongle & Sending Emails

trazman
4: Newbie
My husband has a USB dongle for his laptop, and has no problems accessing the internet with it. But for some unknown reason, he can only recieve emails, not send any.

Is there a simple solution to this, ie a setting error or something more complicated??

Please and Thank you

Hi Daisydiane

Thanks for posting :) but I don't think it will be complicated

By the sounds of it, I would believe that a setting is missing.

I have sent you an email to the address you have provided, can you answer the relevant questions and we can have a look to see if the settings are set up.

Hi,

I have been setting up my dads vodafone dongle and have resolved his ras 635 problem however i just need the smtp settings so he can send emails via windows mail. his incoming pop3 is fine. Can you provide me with the smtp settings please.

If you want to use Vodafone's SMTP server, have a vodafone.net account, then, authenticate your SMTP session for smtp.voadfone.net - if you do not, then, I think you have to use send.vodafone.net.

However, if you are not using vodafone.net, does your email provider not offer an SMTP server for you to use? Just put in the server details, and authenticate with your usual login name and password.

My dad does not currently have internet at home and just uses the dongle for work purposes, however his email address is still a sky.com account and he is out on the road a lot so wants to use his dongle, i believe that you can receive fine with sky but you need the smtp of your provider which in this case is vodafone, will try the servers you posted though, thanks for your help.

It's not a necessity, but, a network provider is only likely to support problems using its own SMTP server. However, if you wish to use Sky's server, but are not using using a Sky connection, Sky is likely to require you to authenticate access to their SMTP server, so that it cannot be used as an open relay.

(For example, I always use my own SMTP server, no matter what provider, using SMTP authentication and TLS - if you were to work on the basis that you needed to always use the network provider's SMTP server, then, when using an Internet cafe or the like, where you may not know the identity of the Internet access provider, you would not be able to use SMTP, since you could not determine which SMTP server you would need to use.)

Ah ok,

yes i understand the reasoning behind that, i was always under the impression you had to use your service provider as the smtp server. Learn something new everyday :)

cheers.
