Using Vmc On My Desktop

dexdyne2
4: Newbie
I have a desktop, and I'd like to administer my broadband USB stick from there, not from th laptop it gets used with.

So I have tried to install VMC on the desktop.

( XP 2002 SP3 Quad CPU )

------------------------------------------------------

I stuck the stick in a USB port, but it completely failed to make any attempt to auto-start and load the software

So I downloaded the latest VMC s/w and installed it.

I notice that VMCService.exe is now being invoked at power-on.....

Now if I start up the VMC software it puts up it's splash screen, mentioning 9.4, then takes it down. It puts up the "main screen", which sits there for a ssecond, and disappears.

If I watch Windows task manager while this is going on, I see MobileConnect.exe oad up about 36meg of memory, and it runs for a total of 15 seconds ( long after everything has disappeared from the screen ) then it shuts down and disappears from the list of processes.

So two questions:

1. is there anything wronmg in proiciple with trying to run this s/we on my desktop?

2. How can I get it to work and not just shut down?

Hi dexdyne2,

The software will run on any PC or laptop with a compatible operating system. What you cannot do, however, is view the total usage via the dongle from a single computer when you use the modem with multiple computers, or copy any settings such as defaults between computers - the information is stored on the computer itself within the VMC software, not the dongle, so you'll see what is relevant to each computer on the respective VMC desktop when displayed.

With regards to why the software is shutting down for you, I'd like to check a few things to see if these can pinpoint the reason for me.

Firstly, can you check all the open programs in the sandbox of icons in the taskbar to see if there is anything there which believes it is connected to a mass storage device when you don't have one connected. If you find one, this has misidentified the dongle, so you need to close the connection down and restart the program.

Secondly, issues can occur when there is a conflict with the ports the software tries to use. This can happen because many programs default to using the lowest available. You can bypass this issue by setting the ports to a higher number:

- Select Control Panel > System > Device manager

- Select Modems and locate the dongle

- Highlight the modem, right click and select Propeties > Advanced > Advanced port settings

- Set COM port to a high number, for example something around 240

- Close this window and go back to Device Manager

- Select Ports (COM + LPT) and check for the dongle (look for any Huawei reference)

- Highlight the modem, right click and select Propeties > Port Settings > Advanced port settings

- Set COM port to a different high number (to avoid conflict with the first setting)

- Reboot the computer

- Check device manager again to ensure there is a record listed under CD ROM drives (as USB Mass Storage device), Ports, Modems and USB controllers

If this doesn't resolve things, the next step would be to look to reinstall the software from a fresh download to ensure there is no corruption causing the issue. Start by redownloading the latest VMC software, then folow these steps to best ensure the program is fully removed before reinstalling:

- Remove the dongle and go to Start > Control panel > add/remove programs

- Select "VMC lite runtime components" or "Vodafone Mobile Connect"

- Ignore the reboot request and close the window

- Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing centre > Manage network connections

- Look for any Vodafone connection (e.g. VMC lite), right click on iot and select "delete". Repeat for any other Vodafone connections listed

- Close "Manage network connections" and open "Phone and Modem connections". If asked for a location, enter your local dialling code

- On the Modems tab, remove any reference to Globetrotter or Huawei, then close the window

- In Autoplay > software and games > install and run programs, look for Vodafone Mobile Connect and if found, right click and delete this.

- Restart the PC and reinstall from the fresh download.

Let us know how you get on with this - if needs be we'll be happy to investigate further.

OK - well that points up one place to start...

If I open device manager I don't have any modems!

I have

Other devices
HUAWEI Mobile. with a big ? and a yellow !

So I assume there is some device driver which hasn't installed properly.

But I have de-and-re installed the suite and it didn't change anything.

I did think of downloading a HUAWEI modem driverfrom the web, but I thought that might do more harm than good.

What next then 🙂

====================================
If I plug in the stick, I can get the CD rom device ( alone ) to appear.....

If I run the setup.exe file it gets a certain way theough, then the CDROM image disappears and I get "welcome to found new hardware wizard" for device "HUAWEI Mobile"

Then I'm stuck - don't kow what to say to that!

What next then 🙂

Hi dexdyne2,

From the description you've given it sounds like there may be some sort of conflict with the modem driver or it simply isn't installing itself correctly. One possible way to resolve the installation issue is as follows:

-With the modem plugged in, ensure that all programs are closed
-Go to Device Manager
-Uninstall the huwaei device with the exclamation mark
-Click the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
-Uninstall any Mass Storage or Composite devices
-Unplug the modem, wait 10 seconds and then plug back in
-If all goes well then the modem driver should be installed correctly.

If this doesn't make any difference then the most likely cause would be a hardware or software conflict in which case I'd recommend performing a "clean boot" to determine where the conflict lies, this can be done as follows:

To Apply “Clean Boot” on Windows XP:
1. Click Start > Run.
2. In the Run window, type following text:
msconfig
3. Click OK.
The System Configuration Utility appears.
4. Click the General tab.
Click on Selective Startup and make sure that "Load System Services" is the only item checked.
(You will be unable to unselect "Use Original BOOT.INI." This is OK).
5. Click the Services tab.
6. Select Hide all Microsoft Services.
Warning Do not skip this step. You must hide the Microsoft Services before you go on to step 7.
7. Clear all the services that are still displayed on the Services tab.
8. Click Apply > OK.
9. Click Restart.

To Apply "Clean Boot" on Windows Vista:
1. Click Start Menu, and type msconfig in the search bar.
2. Hit return (or double left click) on returned Msconfig file to launch System Configuration utility.
The System Configuration Utility appears.
3. Ensure the General tab is selected.
7. Clear all the services that are still displayed on the Services tab by selecting “Disable All”.
8. Click Apply > OK.
9. Click Restart.

If error is cleared then indicates a conflict with another service or application running on the machine. This will require enabling each service/application one by one and retesting to find the service/application at fault.
Note: When you have completed your troubleshooting, follow the steps in the next section to configure Windows to perform a Normal startup.

To Reverse Clean Boot:
Restore your computer to its original settings
1. Rerun MSConfig utility as detailed above
2. On the general tab click Normal Startup.
3. Click OK.
4. Click Restart.

Let me know how you get on :).
