Using Vodafone Sim With Built In Modem On Sony Vaio Vgn-z51xg

I have just got a new Sony Vaio VGN-Z51XG which is running Windows 7. I am trying to get my Vodafone sim to work in the built in slot but can not find a away for this to happen. It works when used in my dongle.

There seems to be some built in Orange Software which I have uninstalled but I cant find out how to connect the SIM through Vodafone mobile connect.

Can any one help with this? If you can, a step by step guide would be really appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Benjiboy,

From the sounds of it the Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) software has been configured to connect using the USB modem driver and not the internal modem driver, you may be able to change this by going to Manage devices within VMC and selecting the Sony Vaio modem if it shows as available.

If that doesn't work then the best way to set this up would be to create a new dial-up connection from scratch to connect with the SIM card. This can be done as follows:

-Go to Start > Control Panel
-Double Click on phone and modem
-If it asks for location info then fill this in
-Click on the modems tab
-Highlight the Sony Modem and click properties
-Click on Change settings then on Advanced
-In the extra initialisation command field type in at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" (add pp. before internet if this is PAYG)
-Press OK, then OK again
-Double Click Network and Sharing Centre
-Click on Setup a New Connection or Network
-Choose Connect to the internet
-Choose Create a New Connection
-Choose Dial-up connection
-Choose the Sony modem as the modem to connect with
-It will ask for the following details
-Phone number:*99#
-Username:web
-Password:web
-Connection name:Vodafone
-Create the connection

If all goes well then it will test the connection and then create it. This can then be accessed by going to Start > Connect To > Vodafone.

Let me know how you get on :).

I have tried to do this the best I can as the options did not come up as you described, however I think I created the connection correctly - the only thing I could not find was the "extra initialisation field" does this exisit in windows 7....when i tried to connect it looked like it was nearly there but then couldn't quite connect....any other thoughts? have you tried this with windows 7 where i think the control panel is different?
Thanks for any help....

Hi There, I have continued to try a variety of things but still no luck. Is there any chance you can give me the instructions again but specific to windows 7 the instructions you gave do not seem to apply to windows 7 or even windows vista from what I can see? eg there is no phone and modem option to double click on?

Thanks in advance...I hope
Ben

Hi benjiboy,

I think the reason it's not connecting is because the extra initialisation command is missing. I don't have access to a Windows 7 PC at the moment and can't find any phone and modem screenshots so I'll have to check on this as soon as I can get hold of a Windows 7 PC. However, the settings do definitely work in Vista and as far as I'm aware the phone and modem screen should be the same. In order to get to this, in the control panel click on the drop down menu next to View By and then choose small icons, you should then see Phone and Modem.

If you then highlight the internal modem and then click properties the intialisation command should be in the advanced tab screen.

Let me know how you get on :).

ok this is what is happening
1) I switch on the sim modem thinh
2) then try and connect to the vodafone settings you gave me web, web and dial *99#
3) It then trials to dial and then I get the window which says error 692 and there is a hardware error in the modem (or other connecting device)
I have tried to screen capture but the file is to big to upload
i have no idea what to do now...

Hi Benjiboy,

Try saving the screenshot as a JPG file instead of BMP - that will reduce the filesize considerably.

In the meantime, the error 692 suggests that the actual Broadband hardware inside the laptop is faulty. We may not be able to support this any further, and I would suggest consulting with the manufacturer.
