Solution

Vodafone Internet --> Message Labs

Hello,

We recently deployed the vodafone dongles in our business and we also now recieve the web content filtering service from message labs, which, when roaming, requires us to have a proxy enabled, When i try and set the proxy (in IE, firefox and even safari) I recieve an error message saying "Invalid Request: Some aspects of the HTTP request is Invalid" I phoned up Message labs (as well as testing with other internet connections e.g. BT internet, 3 Mobile Broadband etc) and found no problem. My only conclusion being that there is something not quite right with either the dongle setup or the network?

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Tony,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum Family, it's always great to see new faces on here :).

To be honest, I'm not familiar with Message Labs so will only be able to provide a limited level of support here. It may be a problem with the VMC software not allowing the proxy to be enabled. I'd recommend either downloading the latest version from our Vodafone Business Site, or try connecting via the dial up connection instead of the software. This can be done by going to Start > Connect To > VMC > Dial/Connect.

Let me know how you get on :).

Hello,

Thanks for your reply,

I have tried this and still recieve the same error message on 2 of the machines using the vodafone dongle service, I also tried disabling the firewall and this still made no effect.

Hi Tony,

We run our own content filter on all of our connections, so I have a suspicion that the two different systems might not be playing well together. There are also other oddities on our data network that could be the culprit, such as the fact we use shared public IP addresses (which can sometimes cause problems for VPN's) but without knowing more about exactly how the Message Labs proxy works or what it does, I'm afraid we're really outside of our scope of support here. Your internet access is clearly working fine, so it's a rather unique fault.

You mention that you're deploying these modems across your business. Are they on a business account, and have you been assigned a Data Manager? If so, I would recommend discussing with them the possibility of setting up a private APN on these modems. That will allow your own IT department to determine exactly what you can and can't access, and allow them to shape the network traffic to their own requirements, ensuring it works better with their systems (and would potentially negate the need to use a proxy in the first place).

If this is going to be a widespread deployment, then a bespoke package like the above would be the best way forward. Alternatively, the setup guides for IT Administrators may help you to understand what our network needs to be in place in order for these kind of services to work properly, and shed some light on the problem.

Hello,

I did some more investigating into this, and found that it has to do with Vodafone assigning all clients with shared IP Addresses, is is possible (or to add on) a Public IP address without having a Private APN assigned?

You can use a third party system such as logmein or setup a VPN tunnel through one of your own
company servers.

I don't know requirements of Messagelabs. A static fixed IP address would be very expensive on
mobile broadband but I believe a dynamic allocated fixed IP for duration of the dialup isn't that
uncommon and many services that fail to work via Vodafone mobile are no problem via other mobile
providers.

Hi Tony,

Unfortunately not - although we are looking to make a move towards Public IP addressing in the future, if RIPE approve our request for more IP ranges.

You could use a service like Hamachi, or LogMeIn, however these require the client application to be installed at both ends, and I'm not sure whether that's something you'd be able to do.
