Vodafone Mobile Broadband - Any Changes Planned In Usage Allowances?

jdixon85

I have a 5GB p/month mobile broadband contract as a phone line is not an option for me. I am a heavy internet user and constantly go over my usage allowance. With other network operators offering higher usage allowances and vodafone upgrading to a 14.4mb/s network, is their any plans to offer a greater usage allowance? After all, what good is speeds of 14mb/s when you would use up your allowance so fast?

Hi jdixon85

Indeed you raise a valid point, in fact it is more than valid as it is one that is often discussed. We have upgraded our network data wise to accommodate the increasing traffic and demand for data services, in much the same way we will at some point look towards increasing data limits.

It is inevitable that as time moves on technology and is services will no doubt expand to meet demand, it's only a matter of time, :)

Thanks

Well I just hope vodafone will increase the allowance before my contract is up in 14 months time. I am really pleased with the service so far, never had a dropped connection and speed is good 99% of the time. But 5GB a month is very limiting, even at my current speed of 1.6mb's. The only thing I have noticed recently is my upload speed has gone down from around 25KB's to 15KB's. I am wondering if one of the Pro dongles with its higher upload speed would increase upload speed in my area? I am at CA7 2LW and use an external antenna on the roof of my house to get a HSDPA signal (Around 3 bars signal strenth). I'm told the nearest mast is a good distance away from me but I have no idea where my signal comes from so I'm not sure if the mast would support the higher upload speeds of the "Pro" dongle. Any info on this would be great Thanks.

Hi jdixon85,

Glad to hear that you're please with your Mobile Broadband connection, hopefully I can answer your questions regarding the speed :)

Firstly, Looking at our Vodafone Coverage Viewer I must admit to be slightly surprised that you've managed to pick up 3G at all, guess our network's better than I give it credit for ;)

I can see that the nearest HSDPA mast to you is 8 and a half miles away halfway between Stainburn and Bridgefoot on the A66 (site 31190). I'm not sure if this is the mast you are picking signal up off though as according to our internal coverage checker the small patch of 3G signal near to you indicates that it is served by site 291 which is a further 2 miles to the South West along the A595 to the site I previously mentioned.

To be honest, I don't think that changing your modem is going to make a great deal of difference in your upload speed as the masts are so far away and you're already using an external antenna to pick them up. More info on these devices can be found here:Vodafone Mobile Broadband Devices

Hope that answers your questions :)

Thanks for the info. Atleast a know where my signal is coming from now. I'm really surprised I get an average ping response of between 150-200ms! Keep up the good work!! 🙂

Well would you believe it! On the exact sameday I posted here saying I was pleased with my Vodafone internet it starts playing up! At first some pages would not load giving the "Internet explorer can't display the webpage" error, a quick refresh and the page would load. But now download speeds are all over the place. Ranging from 15KB's to around 40KB's, sometimes hits over 1mb's for a split second then goes back down. I'm wondering if there might be a problem or maintenance work going on at one of the sites metioned above? Thanks

hi jdixon85,

Sorry to hear of your connection problems, I promise I didn't change anything at this end ;). Hopefully I can get this working faster for you again. The first thing I would advise is that if you're using an external antenna on the roof of your house then you may notice performance drops when the weather is poor particuarly as the masts are so far away from your address.

What I suspect is happening is that your modem is losing its 3G connection and so is dropping down to GPRS (there is a GPRS mast about 1 and a half miles to the East of your location). Have you noticed the light on the modem change colour at all? If it has changed from blue to green then this means your connection has changed to GPRS. There may not be a lot I can do to fix this however I will suggest the following:

It's possible that if you've been using your modem in one area that the SIM might have "fallen behind" on the network and may be struggling to communicate effectively. Do you have access to a Vodafone handset? If so I'd recommend taking the SIM out of your modem and placing it into the phone, quickly connect to the internet on the phone, then place the SIM back into the modem and try connecting again. What this will do is to force a "network refresh" on the SIM card. If you've not got a Vodafone phone then don't worry another method to try would be to try connecting to one of the other networks (this will fail) and then back onto Vodafone. This can be done by going to Tools and then select network.

Give those a try and let me know how you get on :).

Well the weather has been fine. Even in really bad weather the connection has never been affected before. My connection is on a solid HSDPA connection with 3 bars same as usual. I've tried moving the antenna but I must already have it in the best place as the signal always goes down when I try it anywhere else. One strange thing I have noticed is that the dongle stays in HSDPA mode even when not in use. It would normally drop to 3G as soon as internet activity dropped. The first thing I tried was to use the SIM in a phone and access a few web pages but that made no difference. I suppose with the nearest 3G mast being so far away their could be many factors causing the problem. I just hope my dongle isn't on its way out, I've been trough 3 already! Hopefully the problem will sort itself. Oh, I don't suppose theirs any plans to build another 3G site in my area? Your future coverage checker seems to indicate a new mast somewhere around Workington within 6 months. Thanks

On another note, I'm assuming that Huawei makes your "Pro" version dongle as they make all your other dongles. If so can you tell me what Huawei model number the dongle is? For instance your K3565 dongle is a re-branded Huawei E160. Thanks in advance.

It's good to see a company providing good support to thier customers on a web forum. Great work! :)

Hey there jdixon85!

The problem you describe isn't unusual - you might be suffering from cell crossover interruptancy. If your HSDPA signal isn't too strong, your modem might drop to standard 3G - this will result in a minor dropout as your connection swaps to another cell. If you're in an area of fluctuating / fringe HSDPA coverage, this indeed might be the case. I would try setting to 2G Only in your Vodafone Mobile Connect settings > network and seeing if this keeps a steady (if slow) connection. What about if you use the modem in a completely difference area? If you have a laptop, can you try outside of your building perhaps?

From what you've said, I doubt it will be the modem - my own E220 has been soldiering on like a trooper for years!. If there indeed is a problem with it, always check our repairs thread for more info on what we could do to resolve this for you!

The K3760 is actually manufactured by Option, and is better known as the iCON 411 modem. Hope this answers this one for you! Glad you're enjoying the eForum - let us know if you have any further questions! :P

Well I have tried a different modem and SIM and the connection was exactly the same. I have included a picture of the connection speed as I was downloading a large file from the "UseNext" servers. Normally speed would be sustained at around 160KB's but for the last week the connection has been spiking then slowing down as can be seen in the picture. The picture was taken at 6am, through the day the "spikes" are normally a bit lower. I have done a upload test and found that the connection works as normal at a sustained 20KB's. It just seems a bit strange that my connection has worked at a constant 160KB's for months and this strange behaviour has just started. Could their be a problem with the mast near Stainburn? Thanks
