Vodafone data dongle won't work with my laptop (windows xp)

Hi, I've just bought a 1GB vodafone dongle for my laptop, which is an old one which hasn't been used for a while, and which runs windows xp. The dongle starts to load up onto the computer fine, then says "rolling back" and removes the data from the laptop. I probably need to get a few things updated on the computer now, and can get access to wifi via a friend, but the laptop doesn't have an inbuilt wifi connection; can anyone help? My thoughts were that maybe the computer is now in need of updates etc but I can't download anything without my data dongle working, which it may not be doing because the computer needs updating; bit of a Catch 22.

You’ll need to make sure that the dongle is up to date.

To do this, you’ll need to make sure you’re connected to the internet.

Do you have a friend or family member you could ask to use their wifi?
