Web browser will not launch HELP!

I have just moved house and got myself a vodafone dongle to connect to the net from my laptop (samsung Q35). It is the 3G for £15 deal.

The installation of the software seemed fine but the problem appeared when i tried to surf the net. As soon as you plug the dongle into the USB port, no web browser launches regardless of how many times you click on it. This is the case with both Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox!?! The minute you unplug the dongle from the USB port, the pages open up all in queue. The dongle seems to "block" the web browsers? I have reinstalled the software and the same problem exists? I am not hugely technical but any help would be greatly appreciated! Also .pdf files don't seem to open?

I have worked out that if i have a web browser page open before I plug in the dongle, i can surf the web! It's back to front in my opinion. I would just like to be able to plug in and use the net in the "normal" sequence rather than premptive web browser opening. This gets annoying if the browser crashes for some reason, because you can't open another session.

I am also unable to check my balance or go to "my account" unless i had already opened internet explorer? what do i do? i have not configured my laptop so i am completely confused as to why this is happening? if it continues i am going to go with a different company because this is really annoying me!

I spoke to vodafone this a.m. about this and the person didn't help or have a clue! any help in the matter would be hugely appreciated.

thanks!!! :)

Hi sdoxuk90

firstly Welcome to our forum! I'm sure you'll have a great time here with our community.

I suspect that you may have a PC issue as our VMC software has nothing to do with your browsers although it’s strange when you remove the device this happens. I have seen some Server pc's act like this when using back up software through a USB device, in my experience, it’s usually to do with the controller card in you're PC and a mixture of memory settings under Windows.

  • What operating system are you using?
  • Are your USB ports version 1 or version 2 (or even version 3 if its a uber new PC)
  • Have you tried opening IE in safe mode?
  • Go to Start > Run
  • Type iexplore -extoff
  • Press Enter
If PDF documents are not opening then you might need to install Adobe reader onto your PC.

All the best

Hi benJ

Thank you for your response! i will answer your questions in the order you have asked.

1) My operating system is Windows XP Version 2002 service pack 3

2) My laptop has USB 2 ports

3) I followed your instructions to open IE in safe mode but no joy! The only way i can surf the net is if i open the web browsers before plugging in the dongle. The dongle seems to stop things from working...???

4) I have adobe reader on my PC and again the documents will only open once the dongle is unplugged? why is this happening? what is the conflict?

HELP me please!?!?!

if anyone has any idea please reply. If this continues i am sending back the dongle and going with someone else... this type of software conflict is far too annoying for my liking!

Someone out there must have experienced what i am going through! please help!

Hey sdoxuk90,

This does unfortunately sound like a Windows-related issue.

Can you try downloading and installing the very latest Vodafone Mobile Connect version? It might provide a compatibility update that will resolve this.

Also, have you tried using another browser such as FireFox, Safari or Chrome? In my experience, IE is the least stable browser out there so you may find success using another. I'd certainly try the other USB port, too.

Last of all, as to the Adobe Reader - you've got me there! No idea why this is happening, but again it sounds like there's some massive conflict occurring

Ben's not in the office today, but let us know how you get on and I'll pick his brains on the subject next time he's in.

Hello Daz_vodafone :)

Thank you for your reply... looks like we have lift off as they say! :) I think installing the new version of the software has sorted it out. The web browsers are launching fine, i am able to check my balance, account usage etc by clicking on my account etc. I use firefox primarily for the surfing the web. I feel so much happier :D

thank you! i have tried opening .pdf files and that works too! i think the dongle software should really be updated as it caused so much drama.

does the software update automatically or?

thank you for your help!
