stolen Iphone

My iphone was stolen. I'm on a sim only contract with vodafone. I bought the phone direct from Apple.  The local store says they cannot block the phone with the IMEI number as I did not buy it from them, is that correct?

When I spoke to customer services they said they would block it- now I'm worried that they may block my replacement phone, which I also bought direct from Apple.

I don't want the sim blocked as that was not in the phone when stolen (still using that)

thanks wjh

No, Vodafone will not have the IMEI number but, if you do involve them, as I said, they will block the SIM which you have in your present phone. The store or Apple from which you purchased the phone should have a record of the IMEI number and, as said. it will also be on one of the end labels of the box that the phone came in, that's if you still have it and it would be on the receipt from the store or Apple. If you can't retrieve the number then you may just have to write it off where the insurance is concerned. If you could tell us details of who you 'sold' it through we might be able to give you further help and suggestions.

ok thanks, I asked vodafone not to block the sim (as I have it) but only the phone but they did not want the imei number. They said they could do it without- I assume therefore they must have assumed they supplied the phone , which they didn't.  I was worried thye might block my replacement phone which I've now put my orignal sim in.

The sim or new phone is not blocked yet, hoping it stays that way.

I've been to a store since talking to customer services and informed there that they cannot block it if they did not provide the phone.

I do have the imei number of old phone and am going through the insurance process, I thought apple may be able to block it but unfortunately not so as I wiped all data before 'being stolen'- it was a scam via paypal, I should have know better!

If the scam was through PayPal and as long as you followed the conditions of PayPal for delivery you should raise a dispute with them for the return of your money.

At least if you have wiped the phone the scammer is not going to be able to activate it without you Apple ID.

unfortunately I broke one of the small print rules therefore no luck with paypal (my fault, expensive lesson)

I think the scammer will be able to use the phone though just not be able get to my data as I wiped it to factory settings

Seeing you 'sold' it believing it to be going through PayPal, contact PayPal and raise the issue with them, they have an insurance policy where you have protection against such scams and frauds and as such should pay you out the amount you are out of pocket, they will advise and tell you what you need to do.

Okay, you made a mistake with PayPal, so my previous comment may now not be very valid. Seeing you retuned the phone to factory settings then to the person that now has it in their posession it will be just like a new phone and nothing within it linking back to you.
