Solution

Deco X73 DSL as Modem

SimonGA

Hi

I’ve had a Deco mesh network from before I moved to Vodafone, and have been using it with Vodafone and their provided router for over a year with no problem (wifi disabled). However I wasn’t happy with the config (double NAT etc) or the fact I couldn’t use many of the Deco features.

So I purchased an X73 DSL, and have managed to replace the Vodafone modem/router. All is good, apart from the fact it’s noticeably slower, to the point it’s now difficult to work. This is the case with all the extra security features disabled (Web Protection, Intrusion Prevention etc).

Is there something wrong with my settings (see attached)? It seems to have set various “auto” settings, but when I change them to what seems to be the correct actual setting, it stops working altogether.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Simon

Good find, looks like it is the HomeShield Security, even if it appears to be off. Hope you get a reply to your query there.

You will see there are a lot of errors - I assume that’s a sign that something is wrong?

@SimonGA  There's a delay before the images are available to everyone. If you view your comments without logging in you will see a placeholder icon.

Once we can see them we can have a go at helping.

Understood, thank you Cynric

Here are the main areas where I’m assuming the problem is:

DSL settings:

DSL Modulation Type: Auto Sync-up

Annex Type: Annex Auto

Bit Swap: On

SRA: Off

DSL Status:

DSL Modulation Type: VDSL2

Uptime: 12hrs

Line Status: Connected

Annex Type: Annex Auto

Errors Up: 2pkts

Errors Down: 35636pkts

I don't know that actual device/modem/router/mesh, but TP-Link's usually have a setup wizard, so if you use that it should ensure it picks up the correct settings for your device..

Are you connected into the master socket via the same filter as the Vodafone router?

Can you show the DSL stats for the modem? (they may be in your pictures, they still haven't been moderated yet)

Hi Jayach

I’ve added the lines I messed out, below.

I did just change the SRA to “On”, as that was a suggestion in an old thread here, but it dropped the connection. I switched it off again, but still no connection. So I restarted it all again, and it connected okay and so far no errors. However it’s still very slow.

The laptop that I have the main problems in uses Zscaler. Could that be relevant?

The 2dbm on the download is very low, I'd be expecting the router and cabinet to be retraining at some point very soon!

Is that on the SNR Margin?

Since the restart still no errors so far, but the SNR Margin download is still 2dB. I assume the lower the SNR the better as long as no errors?

Theoretically yes, but DLM wouldn't usually take it that low, it will leave a margin for unexpected noise, otherwise the line is in danger of resynching frequently.

It has dropped mine to 4db, but that was after a period of good conditions, it will usually start at approx. 6.

So any idea what I should do? Contact Vodafone?

I was surprised to see “FTTP on Demand” showing as a available on the openreach site, as I haven’t seen that available with any ISPs..
