I am having regular router issues. From time to time the red light comes on, not flashing, and no data will transfer. Stays like this for around 5 minutes, then works again. Happens about 3 times a day. It's not the line, as had BT check it properly and also not the exchange, as the exchange is not recording any resync. Vodafone state that the router is fine
Any ideas?

It's difficult to troubleshoot intermittent issues unfortunately @Mattkillingley and can be a number of factors.
May I assume you telephoned the Broadband Team direct on 08080 034 515 ?
There are some troubleshooting tips in Broadband-and-Home-Phone-FAQs.
Some have found it better for them to use their own router however the Vodafone Connect Router should work as it's designed to do. Some have had their router replaced.

I'm not suggesting you should go and buy another router only that it's an option that can be considered.
