DEC 2022 Fastest DNS servers on the FTTC Vodafone network

Test results for the fastest DNS servers on the FTTC Vodafone network in the Midlands. It may not be correct if you are in another area or FTTP Vodafone city fibre or other isp 

 

fastest first 

Quad9                       = 9.9.9.9

NNT LTD 2914          = 129.250.35.250

Cloudflare                 = 1.1.1.1

Sprintlink                  = 204.117.214.10

AdGuard                   = 94.140.14.14

google                      = 8.8.8.8

Vodafone Euro cw   = 141.1.1.1

Uunet                       = 158.43.128.1

OpenDNS                 = 208.67.222.222

 

way down the list was Vodafone = 90.255.255.90

.@gipjon Interesting results. What happens with the other DNS products from the suppliers you listed? I'm thinking of the ones with their own blacklists and other security features, for instance as available from Quad9 and Cloudflare. On my Pihole I have set the DNS servers as 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2.

most people don't realise why there is a different DNS address on each server 

eg 

1.1.1.1 for Families

( CloudFlare will provide the ability to define additional configuration settings for 1.1.1.1 for Families. )

The Caching DNS on the router uses DNS over TLS and Cloudflare 1.0.0.2 & 1.1.1.2

The Caching PiHole uses a private paid-for DNS proxy.

Quad9 is somewhat academic since BBC iPlayer and a few other apps won't work on the Google TV with Chromecast

 

*DNS Bench was run from a laptop over WiFi, so you need to factor in a little extra latency for that!

been testing 1.1.1.1     1.1.1.2     1.1.1.3

and the results are after about 50 tested at different times 

1.1.1.1 is always faster

1.1.1.3 is slower by 2ms to 10ms compared to 1.1.1.1

1.1.1.2 is slower by 3ms to 15ms compared to 1.1.1.1

For the record though, if you use the router (or another device) as a caching DNS, then the numbers will be almost identical through the router no matter what the target DNS is - at least on sites that you visit more than occasionally.

Something that's been ignored so far as I see is the fact that DNS speeds, much like anything else on the internet, will vary by location. It'll also vary hour by hour. Surely it's better to run your own tests and go by your own results. M247 is faster than anything else for me.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT M247 IS DON'T USE IT BECAUSE IT IS CLASSED AS FRAUDULENT

The fraud-detection network considers M247 Ltd to be a potentially high​ fraud-risk ISP, by which we mean that web traffic from this ISP potentially poses a high​ risk of being fraudulent. approximately 66% is suspected to be potentially fraudulent.

Web traffic and DNS services are completely different. My VPN service (Nord) frequently uses M247 servers (among many others) I would imagine scammers also frequently use VPN's so they can't be easily traced.
