High Latency

I usually get a ping somewhere between 5ms and 8ms, but for the last three days I have been getting 11 or 12ms. Each time I have used the same test server. In any case all the other servers produce even higher pings.  There are no problems with speed. 

 

Is anyone getting the same issue and is there a wider problem atm? 

 

One of the reasons I left Virgin Media, apart from up speed  was that their ping was always 12 or 13 ms, which is not great for gaming.

Here is what background latency should be with Vodafone. The first TBB graph shows mine a few days ago. The green area indicates latency.

The second image shows what it is like now. Notice how the green band indication latency is thicker on the second image.  Ignore the outages in the first part. That was me rebooting and messing with router settings on my AX11000.

Thanks. There is a possible explanation in there.

 

By the way,  I have a static IP, which normally gives me fantastic performance, so that takes out one possible factor for the decline in my service. Before I had a static IP,  my speed and ping changed along with my IP on a frequent  basis.

 

I did a reverse DNS trace. I'm not sure what it is telling me except that there is one stand-out bottleneck.

I also did a CMD panel tracert for 1.1.1.1. Ping would normally be  between 5 and 8.

Your reverse traceroute is coming through Iceland, so let's just ignore that one for now. 

The interesting thing is your normal tracert - the gateway aka PoP (90.246.0.1) is in Leeds. If you're nowhere near there then that is an issue - the main issue in the thread @Jayach linked to above so you may like to join us.

I'm in Coventry. Switching to test servers between here and Leeds gives me latency up to 18ms.  Leeds is still in the picture, but it seems to be not always the only bottleneck,

I have the same gateway address as the OP 90.246.0.1. How do you know that it is in Leeds?

If I put the address in here: https://www.iplocation.net/ip-lookup the different databases put it in completely different parts of the country..

However if I do a reverse traceroute it gives the last server as 

ae8-xcr1.man.cw.net (195.2.9.98)  

which definitely sounds like Manchester. 

Not saying you are wrong, just trying to understand how you can be sure.

Just a quick check with arin, it comes back as 

ldscd2-bng-c1 Leeds

Whether it's physically in Leeds can't be confirmed but that is vodafone's designation. It IS my dream gateway though. 

Reverse traceroute will services fall down if they're hosted abroad. Traffic originating from abroad often follows a different route. The OP's chosen service was hosted on a server in Iceland.

In the other thread everyone was talking about their reverse traceroute from or via the USA.

Vodafone's network is quite frankly a bit of a mess. I can picture many miles of patch cables in their datacantres.

Thanks for that, I hadn't heard of arin, and reverse DNS queries came back with no host name, so I wondered how you could tell.

I'm in south east Essex, so really I want a London gateway.

Sorry to hear this is happening to you.

I am near London and used to be routed via London.

Vodafone's 'all new and improved amazing' load balancing system apparently means I am best routed though Manchester! And apparently folks up north should be routed via London - INSANE!

What makes this more annoying is the systems I need to access are in London and used to work amazingly well before someone at Vodafone decided to mess up the configuration. For some reason it thinks I'm based up north. No matter how many times I reconnect, reboot etc it keeps giving me Manchester or other northern IP addresses and assigns me the Manchester BNG. 

Like you I used to be on Virgin Media. Minimum latency used to be 9-10ms, average used to change depending on local demand and so on. Before that on ADSL/VDSL it used to be 10-14ms depending on the connection. Now on the cutting edge CityFibre Vodafone FTTP product, I get 20ms!  How's that for progress!

I have to agree, I think the crazy routing is the result of load balancing.

 

I'm now routed through Manchester (despite living down South). On top of this I can no longer trade from home as my algos need a latency under 20ms.

 

As for the routing, just as an example, it used to be 5 hops to bbc.co.uk for me, now it's 12 hops and 3 times the latency.
