I'm renovating and rebuilding a bungalow so this is classed as self-build. There is a telegraph pole with a line going to a gable end of the bungalow but this line is not active. I want to reinstate the phone line and to install broadband as I need this for the charity work I do. Don't want to use BT, want to use Vodaphone but don't know next steps.

Does your bungalow have a postal address? If so, you should just be able to order on-line just like any other customer.
Be aware though, if your area is now full fibre, they won't re-enable the copper line.

Most places do have full fibre now.
It means Openreach will replace it with fibre, if they have it installed on the pole.
Difficult to be sure without more info on your situation, for instance does that pole serve other properties?
I would suggest just try putting your address in a comparison site and see what is offered. Why are you against getting BT? (it will probably be EE anyway)

Hi, thanks for your comments they are very helpful. Pole serves 4 bungalows including mine. I could ask my neighbours what they are on. I put my address into comparison site and the usual providers came up Sky, Virgin, Vodafone, BT, Talk Talk. I used to be with BT at my existing property and service was terrible but probably not fibre. Switched to Virgin and service experience terrible as even though its cable it has been undergoing upgrades for the last 3 years.. Used to be on Vodafone with work which seemed much better.

Any provider using the Openreach infrastructure (which is most of them, except Virgin, and the new AltNets) will have a the same underlying quality of connection. The difference will be the router supplied, and the customer service.
