Landline phone with own router on FTTP

Just got FTTP and everything is working fine off the VF router. Phone lines are plugged into the VF router, VF router's WiFi is switched off. 3rd party Mesh has been switched to Bridge mode and plugged into the VF's ethernet port.

However I am shocked at how feature poor the VF router is. e.g. There are no Parental controls at all. I know I can get rid of the VF router and plug my own Mesh router into the Openreach ONT, but what about the Landline.

Are there any 3rd party routers in the market that have a telephone socket at the back to allow the home phone to be plugged in?

I hope someone has got one working. It's been a while since we had any new phones added.

Word of warning though. If you read some of the latest posts in the thread @Jayach linked you'll see some of the users that had a working system seem to have been blocked now. This thread - seems they've been merged lol

Thanks @Ripshod, I've been on with this for over a year now, most recently trying the HT801 but like others on here it failed on my Draytek 2927LAC and the 2866AC. I run these with failover with Vodafone as backup.

The problem doesn't appear to be unique to Vodafone though- my alt fibre supllier's  FTTP service has similar issues with the VOIP service.

I'm about to try the Draytek 2866vac which has built in ATA ports but I really want a non-analogue solution with more than 2 lines (1620 and 1625)

Someone may have more success, but there has to be a tipping point and it had better be before the 2025 copper switch-off

It's now January 2027, so you've got a while yet.

@ecoman I just have a saved link which I paste when this kind of question comes up, so I don't read it 🤣

You just wouldn't believe how many people can't be bothered to search the forum before posting. 😁

I 100% believe it@Cynric . when I joined the thread in May 2023 it was page 3 🤣 and I really only added the Grandstream model in the hope Google would pick it up.

currently use Polycom and Grandstream IP phones, and they work flawlessly with 'conventional' VOIP services but are like round holes trying to accommodate Vodafone's square peg

You can add me to the list of people who managed to get the HT801 working faultlessly for more than a year up until the end of September when it started to falter and then stopped taking incoming and outgoing calls. If I was a cynic I would suspect Vodafone of blocking all but their own equipment.

Back to the drawing board and a diet of mouldybread.

And another thing...... Vodafone broadband comes with no conventional land line so VOIP is the only alternative for me.

Again no time right now however I have just got my HT801 working again, I need to do some double checking but what is definite is my TP-Link modem router is using DNS servers to 90.255.255.90 and 90.255.255.255  My HT801 is using DNS servers to 90.255.255.91 ??? and 90.255.255.255. Stupidly I changed a lot of the localisation values at the same time so I will have to repeat everything step by step and test.

I know we see this a lot, but, is there anychance you can post your working settings for the HT801? I'm in the process of trying to get this working at the moment and it's all going waaay over my head. I've copied the settings working through this thread, but, no joy so far. I have my details from vodafone (but still need to fire up the old router and confirm they've actually given me the right username) and I think the firewall settings are correct (it's just disable sip alg and the port forwarding?)

I also have a few questions on the HT801 as it's a new device to me. Is there a log of what it's trying somewhere on it? Also, the "Not Registered" message that I get, how soon after changing settings might that change? Is it instant? or do I need to give it a few minutes each time?

Tried again today. Whenever we ring one mobile on Three, outgoing calls always work. Tried a few others that seems to always work.

But calling my Vodafone mobile never ever works, just silent and my Mobile does nothing. However if I wait long enough listening to the silence, my mobile voicemail kicks in. I then get a missed call text. Really strange.
