Network shows 5G, but I can barely connect to the internet!

The Vodafone Network Checker says there's perfect 5G service at my location (Newcastle - NE12 8BS). My phone shows the 5G symbol at the top. Phone calls and sms messages are working fine, but I can barely connect to the internet. This has been going on for weeks and I'm now confused.

Hi @obailala looking into the network in the area NE12 8BS there doesn't seem to be any known major issues that could be causing you issues. If you can please message us here we can get things looked into with you.

Hi. Can I add my issue to this - I am experiencing exactly the same issue which I've noticed for perhaps the last week or two. I also happen to be in around the same area when this happens - postcode NE12 8DG. My 5G works fine when I'm else where either in the car or at home etc, but when I'm at work which is the NE12 postcode my 5G says it has a full signal but won't actually load anything through the internet.

I am quite tech savvy and tried a few things, included switching my SIM to an e-SIM as I read that a degrading SIM could cause similar issues and my SIM card is quite old, however I am still experiencing the issues. I have noticed however (also temporary fix for OP who posted yesterday) that when I change in my network settings (iPhone settings > Mobile service > SIM > Voice & Data) to 4G instead of 5G, that connection is fine! It shows 4G in the corner and internet loads great, but as soon as I switch to 5G - despite it showing a full 5G signal, it totally cuts out.

I think there may be something wrong with the 5G network in this area despite your network status checker suggesting otherwise.

Feels good to know I'm not the only one experiencing this; there's definitely a 5G network outage in the NE12 area.

Many thanks for the suggestion, it worked like magic! I've just switched to 4G and smooth internet service has been restored on my phone: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > 4G/3G/2G (auto connect)
