Public facing IP for LTE SIM

Hello. This has been asked variously by several people, but generally concerning their broadband setup.

I am asking concerning my LTE data SIM, which I just happen to have plugged into a 4G router, which I use for my internet access. To be clear, this is not the "Vodafone Broadband" "service" offering. But the problem is the same.

My router receives an IP address from the VF network. This is a private (10.x) address, which VF NATs out to an external IP address. I have this external IP address mapped to a domain alias (using Dyndns). (So I don't need a public facing address that's necessarily static, just an address that's public... I think.)

But when I try to ping it, no response. I have also tried pinging from "outside" the VF domain (using Wormly). No response. Needless to say, I can't connect back into my LAN from the internet, which is the familiar objective here.

Essentially, this is no different to me trying to ping my mobile from the internet. Like many, I have struggled greatly trying to explain this to various 'technical teams', who don't appear to be able to help (or understand - one of them didn't know what DNS is).

So, any clues, please?

Someone somewhere suggested I need an L2TP provider but alas my router doesn't support L2TP configuration, so that's out, too (besides which, they're not cheap).

Hey @VictorMeldrew I hope you are doing well!

What did the Tech teams suggest when you spoke to them last? Just to check, the SIM that you are using does it have a dedicated data plan and does it work when it is placed in a phone?

It does indeed. It's basically a normal mobile SIM.

In the end I gave up trying to explain what I'm after (which is why I'm posting here) after 101 misinterpretations. As I said, when you're trying to talk to someone who doesn't even know what DNS is, it's really not worth pursuing that avenue for a solution.
