Solution

Extending Wifi with two routers

Hello

I appreciate there are lots of topics on this issue but I haven't been able to work out how I can extend my WiFi range using two routers so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've recently had a house rewire and as part of this the electrician ran an ethernet cable from where my router is to the other side of the house where my office is and where the connection is poor due to being a distance from the router.

I've got a second router which is plugged in to the ethernet cable but this doesn't seem to be linking to my main wifi connection. Looking through the forums it looks as though I need to 'bridge' the two routers? Please could someone explain step by step how to do this to a complete novice with very little technical knowledge?!

I've attached photos of my main router and the additional router that I bought if that helps.

Many thanks in advance,

Tom

Your pictures haven't been moderated yet so I don't know what router you have bought, but I wonder if you wouldn't be better off with a device designed to that job. Such as:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Extender-Broadband-Ethernet-RE305/dp/B01N4I3YOB/

Edit: or this one which appears to be a later model with *fast* ethernet port. (but I cant find the actual speed to check it is 1Gbit)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Extender-Broadband-Ethernet-RE330/dp/B0929WHLPP/

I have no experience of using such a device, but usually TP-Link devices are pretty good.

Now your pictures have been moderated, what model is the netgear?

You will find many guides on how to do this on the web, here is one:

https://www.pocnetwork.net/tips/how-to-connect-two-routers-to-share-the-same-network-using-the-secon...

Basically you set the base address of the second router outside of the scope of the DHCP server in the main router.

So as the THG3000 uses 192.168.1.2 to 200 set it above 200 say 192.168.1.244, turn off DHCP in the Netgear and connect the ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the Netgear. That should do it.

Any queries just ask.

Good luck.
