Multicast Question....

I am seeing a lot of these messages on the Lan side of my Vodafone router -

11/04/2024 16:54:06  Ignoring MLD pkt on non snooping enabled bridge interface lan

11/04/2024 16:51:58  Ignoring MLD pkt on non snooping enabled bridge interface lan

11/04/2024 16:49:53  Ignoring MLD pkt on non snooping enabled bridge interface lan

The log entry "Ignoring MLD pkt on non snooping enabled bridge interface lan" on your Vodafone router refers to the router ignoring Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) packets on a bridge interface that does not have snooping enabled.

Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) is used by IPv6 routers to discover multicast listeners on a directly attached link. Snooping is a feature that allows the router to listen to these packets and manage multicast traffic more efficiently. When snooping is not enabled, the router ignores these packets, which is what your log entry is indicating.

How do you enable MLD snooping on a Vodafone Power Hub?

Thanks in advance

@CrimsonLiar and @infinidim , here's an idea, with no proof, what if VF are just binding their time on a number of upgrades until the merger with Three is complete. Just my "two new pence" worth 😁

@Cynric you might be right there.

Vodafone use the old Cable and Wireless /  Mercury as part of the RedStream network core infrastructure for the core of the broadband network. The routers are a mixture of Cisco and Juniper and I am sure that the fibre side has a lot of Ciena equipment in it.

If the merger with "3 UK" goes ahead then I am sure that "3 UK" will move off the BT Openreach infrastructure that they current use onto the Vodafone RedStream network. It would be a major saving for the combined group and there is plenty of capacity available on the RedStream network as well

Anyway that is what I would do - I have designed and supported a few networks in a past life.

It still doesn't solve my MLD issue with Vodafone supplied routers.

@infinidim While I am waiting for pigs to fly and unicorns to trot along my high street I was wondering if the merger could mean their senior architects did some planning. Having done some architect designs for blue-chip companies I know how long it can take from paper (computer) to physical installation.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Vodafone - or several other ISPs - to implement MLD on their home routers that manage 1Gbps network connections.  It's a useful protocol on 100Mbps connections, but for most users with 1Gbps home networks, the background multicast/broadcast data levels are going to be too minimal to bother with.  That's "most users", there does come a point where if a user needs more powerful equipment, they'll probably have to provide it themselves!  With our OP having a background in corporate networking, I'm surprised that the lack of MLD is the first short fall in the capabilities of Vodafone's consumer routers.
