I have a VF router and would like to install VPN client to the router as I understand the VF does not have this as standard on install, can anyone tell me how this is done and any recommendations for the VPN

It's not possible.
Your choices are a VPN server on another device on your network (not likely to work) or get your own router that can run vpn (plus a lot more control over your whole network)

Setting up a Raspberry Pi as a VPN gateway is an "intermediate" task, but would be a steep learning curve for anyone who has not done this before.
Also, what benefit does the OP believe they will see from using a VPN?

If it's only needed for one PC or tablet then it may be possible to have the VPN client installed there.
