Slow speeds on Microsoft servers

tim1974
4: Newbie

Has anyone else experienced very slow speeds when accessing files on Microsoft servers (Office 365, OneDrive, SharePoint etc.)? My download speeds are normally in line with my max line speed (c. 56 mbps) until I come to open a file hosted on a Microsoft server. For example, when downloading a file from MS Teams or SharePoint, the download speed is about 70 kbps. Which is unusable.

The problem only occurs when I am using my Vodafone fibre broadband connection at home.

I have reset the router, disabled content controls and even swapped out the Vodafone Router for a 3rd party router. Absolutely no difference. It is extremely perplexing and frustrating.

Anyone else come across this issue?

They don't care. Have tried to get to the bottom of it for 2 years. They've attempted to deflect blame several times but after supplying irrefutable evidence that it's ONLY a Vodafone issue they escalate it then you don't hear anything. Had one really helpful guy who put in my notes that he's confirmed its a vodafone issue after testing it at 2 other homes  that use vodafone using several machines and by using 3 different vodafone 4G mobile hotspots. All with the same slow results. Averaging 200Kbp download speed from onedrive/sharefile on a 40Mbp connection. On office ISP I get 4Mbp download.

Its apparently still escalated but last time I heard was 2 months ago.

Sounds like I will definitely be leaving them then. It makes working from home next to impossible when working on such big files. It’s painful!

Did you switch providers in the end? Who did you go with, if so?

Haven't switched yet. Just starting to shop around. Would appreciate any advice.

I'm sorry to hear you've not received a solution to your issues @user_3241 and @scottreadman. If you pop us a private message through one of our social channels, we'll be more than happy to look into this and continue to work with you until we've resolved these problems.

@Mark This is clearly not related to our individual connections. Support wanted me to take my phone socket apart today, despite me explaining this forum (and others online) with users experiencing the same.

With that in mind, are you not able to escalate to some senior engineers/developers to look into - given you're within the Vodafone corporate setup and will have people to email/call directly? Evidently from this thread, and others, this is NOT to do with our personal connections; this is a much wider spread issue with the way you are routing the traffic.

Hi @user_3241, thanks for getting back to us. Have you spoken to us on Twitter or Facebook? If so, did you include your Community username? When you contacted our support team, did you get this raised? We'll need you to go through the troubleshooting with the support team so they can escalate this to the second line. Let us know how you get on.

Hi @MarkD

Forgive me for the obvious question but what is the difference between reporting here and on Twitter? It's just another barrier to a resolution.

Going through support is a waste of my time when this issue is very clearly a more widespread Vodafone issue with how you are routing the traffic that needs escalating further than second line support!

I've already made the decision to leave. I spent hours on the phone yesterday with support wasting my time taking a phone socket apart. A phone socket, is not going to affect connections only to certain servers (in this case Microsoft Business related servers) - the whole connection would not work correctly if there was a problem with the phone line.

It's just another excuse to fob you off and not spend any time sorting out the real issue. There are forums all over the internet about this issue that have been going on exclusively on Vodafone for over 2 years and yet nothing is done about it and we're asked to take our phone sockets apart to connect to a test port. It's laughable to be honest.

As @user_3241 said this isn't to do with individual setups. Two vodafone support specialists I've spoken to in the last 18 months/2years have confirmed that this is ONLY a Vodafone issue. Confirmed by testing in many different ways. The slow downloads occur on Vodafone Broadband and using a vodafone mobile hotspot. They NEVER occur on any other ISP. And its ONLY when downloading from microsoft either using the onedrive app or direct from a sharepoint website. Downloads of below 200KBps. I get better downloads in a cafe at around 1MBps. I get 4-5MBps on the office WiFi.

My issue has been escalated twice and then everything goes quiet. When it started for me nearly 2 years ago I found many people with same issue then but Vodafone never acknowledges this and blatantly ignores it. Every time I contact Vodafone again they ask me to go through all the same trouble shooting even though its already APPARENTLY been escalated.

I wonder what response you would get if you told Microsoft that Vodafone was actively degrading their products?

It crossed my mind too. I have a friend who works in quite a senior role for Azure services at Microsoft and thought about mentioning it to him.
