Hi there,

I have read through the forum and have all of the steps. I have got the log details as well as other configuration settings. I am currently looking at two routers and would love to know if anyone uses either one of theses. Ideally, I would like to use the slightly cheaper one. The reason for the change is connection drop out, poor signal as only get two bars upstairs and issues with connecting ring and other devices due to 2ghz.

Asus rt - ac86u

Or

RT-AX86U

I have the  RT - AC86U. It works well and does everything I need it to. Handles the 4G back up with no problems.

I use a WIFI repeater but that's mainly for the wifi cameras that I have in the back garden. We don't have a big house so I can't say how it would perform in a larger property.

The RT-AX86U is the newer wifi6 version of the AC86U. If you want the wifi6 functionality and wpa3 then the ax is the one to go for. If you don't see yourself 'needing' those in the near future you could go for the AC version. The AX does have the ability to run the latest asuswrt-merlin - check that out on the snbforum.

If they're closely priced it'll be worth going for the AX imho, but I'm biased as I use the RT-AX88U which seems a big step up from my RT-AC88U.

Thank you, some really good points. I have to remind myself now it is all WiFi versions where as I am user to old school names 802.11 a/b/g/n etc... Think I will go for the RT-AX86U hopefully worth the price tag 😁

Good choice going with Asus. Keep in touch, let us know how you get on 😉

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Our house isn't huge, like most new builds, just plaster boards ha. I have the 500mb so don't think it came with 4g dongle

Vodafone's implementation of the 4g backup is really poor to be honest anyway so you're not missing much.

What are you going yo be using the internet for? Silly question but may affect our recommendations.

Ps5 gaming, two Skype calls simultaneously using the Pro cams and reading all the documentation it appears both routers are good with the RT-AX86U exceeding expectation.

Hi,

I finally got round to setting this up. What a nightmare initially as I kept going through all the login details and it appears the information given to me was incorrect. The staff at Vodafone mentioned to use 101 but actually it is supposed to be 911 even though my broadband is not gigabit. Pretty happy with it so far and the Vodafone router there is just for show now.

Your broadband is FTTP supplied by CityFibre that's why the VLAN ID is 911!

I really hope that's not where the router is going to live!
