WD NAS storage doesn't show up in the new Super Fast Vodafone router

JoseAlmeida

Since I got Vodafone broadband my WD NAS storage doesn't show up in the Vodafone Router.

The ethernet lights are amber for left and amber blinking on the right meaning I have a 1000Mbps connection.

But when I go to the router to check the IP address of the NAS storage, there is no IP for the NAS on the LAN connection.

Quite weird.

Help.

I know and I am not asking for any, hahahha.

The router I have is the new Ultra Hub wifi 6.

The NAS disk is a old wd10000G032-001.

I did the NAS reset, nothing.

I did the change to the subnet 192.168.0.1, nothing.

I dont think I gave it a static IP, but the reset procedure on the NAS should remove an IPs and also put the default admin and password.

It should indeed, so i don't think we need to worry what might have been there before.

I don't know that router so I will assume the setup is similar to the THG3000.

I think it would be best to go back to basics, so I would  factory reset the router and connect nothing to it except a laptop/PC for configuration purposes.

Then connect the NAS, and check in the router under Status & Support, scroll down and make sure a speed is registered for the LAN port it is connected to (I believe there are only 2 on the Ultra router)

Then check the router to see if any Ethernet devices are shown. As the router has been factory reset the only possible devices are the laptop/PC and the NAS.

Now comes the bit I'm not sure about, I downloaded the manual for that NAS and I can't see anything about connecting directly to the NAS, it may need the WD Anywhere Access Software to actually connect to the NAS so try running that.

It say in the manual, section 5, "To use My Book World Edition, installing WD Anywhere Access is required" so maybe it does a "grope" to find the device and set it up.

If at this point it doesn't find the drive then I don't know where we go next.

I got a copy of the manual from here, if you don't have one.

Recovery Button
Pressing the recovery button while powering up the device resets the admin user
name and password to default without erasing shared folders or volumes. The
recovery button also resets network configuration to DHCP (obtain an IP address
automatically). Follow the instructions below to reset the device using the recovery
button.
1. Turn off the device and disconnect all cables from the unit.
2. Insert a paperclip or narrow tipped pen into the recovery slot on the back of the
unit. Press and hold down the recovery button.
3. While continuing to hold down the recovery button, connect the power cable to
the back of the unit.
4. Hold the recovery button down until 10 seconds after the power/activity LED
lights on the front of the device, then release the button. The unit may take up to
three minutes to boot up completely.
Note: The default user name is admin and the default password is 123456

Just to add. I had one of these way back in 2008. I don't know when they were deemed EOL and there's only limited support from WD.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just failed now, the router change just being a coincidence.

Have you tested with it directly connected to your computer? I'd certainly be looking to replace it now.

Hi,

yeah I did, but on Windows 10/11 SMB1 and SMB2 are gone, this WD need it to discover the disk, so connecting directly to the disk wont work unless I get an old version of windows.

I will try using Linux this afternoon.

@JoseAlmeida ON W10 SMB1 is hidden.

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > SMB 1.0.CIFS File Sharing Support.

The following link applies to desktop and server Windows versions.

I think this is a network problem. Presumably the windows system was set up correctly before the router change or smb would not have worked.

However, given the age of the device your advice would be solid for a fresh Windows install.

It's that long ago I can't remember whether smb1 is required or not.

Things are not helped by WD's site being down. I was only on it yesterday getting a resource for one of their desktop external drives too. I was going to see if WD had anything useful.

Hi,

Yes this sorted out, I made the changes on my windows 11 to add SMB and connected the NAS directly to my PC.

And now I can access see the the NAS in the explorer and can access the public driver using the Admin - 123456 password.

But cannot map my personal drive as I need also user name and password, this is something that the Anywhere WD software could solve.

Anyway if changing that config made my NAS availabe with direct connection to my computer, then is there a setting in the Vodafone router to activate SMB so that the router can recognise the NAS?

Thanks,

Jose

Unfortunately not. Those settings are just for usb drives plugged into the router.

You need to set up direct smb access over the network. I assume the admin password you have now would also work for that.

If you have an android device search Google play for an app called "Port Authority". That will show you every device on your network by ip/mac. MAC should be on a level on the NAS.
