Are the European Roaming extras on top of BVB / PAYG1 charges or instead of them

That is, can I cancel my bundle if I'm traveling and using one of the European roaming extras, and if so will I be charged £1 a day and limited to 50 MB a day on top of the extra?

You won't need the BVB in Europe @beojan , providing you don't send and picture messages, premium rate calls and texts, you will have the extra to take care of calls, texts and data, just be aware the extra only includes 100 minutes, 200 texts and 3GB data, and you may need to add an additional extra.

The trick is to get your friends and family to call you, they will still be calling a UK number and won't pay any extra and use WiFi wherever possible for your data.  The roaming extra starts the day it is added for PAYG, make sure you add the extra on the day you leave the UK.

Looking at another option is to ensure your phone is unlocked to all Network's and use local sim cards.
