There are previous threads asking this question, if you enter the question in the forum search facility these will come up.
As with all PAYG SIM plans the SIM has to be used for outgoing and well as incoming, if you have not made a chargeable connection during the last 180 days the SIM would have been disconnected from the network. Before disconnection you would have received a text asking you to make some outgoing activity.
Unfortunately, if it's been longer than 180 days since the last outgoing activity or top up you won't be able to get the number back.

Well I never received any messages to ask me or warn me, the only messages I received from Vodafone are random messages every month telling me what my bill is even tho I'm on pay as you go. Nevertheless I have switched over to Smarty with my other phones and devices. I don't want anything to do with this service ever again.

For your benefit you need to get the account checked @Annoyedman .
If you were receiving monthly billing emails you would have been on a monthly SIM only contract and not PAYG where you would have topped up and added credit when necessary and probably had a monthly PAYG Big Value bundle fore your monthly use.
There may be a monthly bill that hasn't been paid and this will be the reason for you losing service. Vodafone are duty bound to report unpaid bills against a credit file and it really is important to ask someone at Vodafone to clarify the plan you were on.

I got my simcard from a local store it had nothing to do with pay monthly, I was not subscribed to any offers or services. I don't owe vodafone anything and I've never had a contract. I was getting texts telling me what my bill was for the end of the month. The number I had was hardly topped up as I used it for incoming calls.

Hi @Annoyedman In order to keep a Pay as you Go mobile active, you need to use it once every 180 days. This must be for a chargeable activity – like sending a text or making a call. You should be notified after 90 days of no use to prompt you to do so, prior to any disconnection. More on this can be found here.
If you pop us over a message via the contact information here, we can get this looked into for you.
