Call problems in the US

step_hen
4: Newbie

I’m currently in the US, where Vodafone use T-Mobile and AT and T. I wanted to make people aware there’s a technical  issue with AT and T that prevents voice calls being made and received. Calls can be made on T- Mobile, but I find that their coverage is inferior to AT and T,’s. After several conversations with Voda tech support, they acknowledged there is a problem with AT and T, but, apparently, they’re not in touch with AT and T to resolve the problem.

Wifi calling doesn’t work overseas?

My phone wouldn’t attach to AT&T at all.

On I am in Boston and the service is appalling! Call quality is the worst that I have every had. It seems I can only use T-Mobile. If the quality isn’t bad then I simply can’t connect to a call at all. Seems to only affect calls as I can message and use data. After nearly 28 years with Vodafone it’s time to change !

At least you had data - in Houston I was basically only on T-Mobile 2G at all times and data was useless.  4G very very occasionally and even then it was very slow.

As you mention call quality was awful or failed completely.

I had a colleague from Australia (Telstra) who was roaming on AT&T and had no issues at all - even had 5G!

I have another trip to the US next month - I will be ported out of Vodafone by then.

I'm in DC today and the T-Mobile service is a joke! I've constantly got full bars but can't get any data at all, it's obviously dropping down off of 4G and moving to 2G instead for everything... as demonstrated by it connecting via Edge... I didn't even know edge was still a thing?!?! What the hell are you doing Vodafone?!

Just wanting to add my experience here as well... I recently travelled to both Seattle and San Fransisco where the service was a joke. Like many, I was completely unaware of the issues surrounding roaming and so found it unusual when I was thrown on to the T-Mobile network. Rarely when out and about in either city, would I have ANY signal at all, just "no service". Occasionally I would get a 4G signal, but it would very quickly drop to Edge, or no service and I would then run through the whole airplane mode toggle cycle to get the signal back.

The whole experience made my trip a complete nightmare, I almost missed a ferry as I wasn't able to download my tickets, and rideshare apps were completely unusable unless I had a WiFi connection somewhere.

For reference, I was using an iPhone 13 Pro and was paying the £6 daily fee to use data abroad, and honestly I feel robbed as I was rarely able to actually use said data. I even reset my network connections on my phone in the hope it was some weird glitch, but that didn't help.

To summarise, I wasn't even able to get a reliable 4G data connection in two of the most technologically forward cities in the world, using a less than 12-month-old device, let alone make any kind of calls. It was a complete joke, and frankly dangerous... Next time I am in the US, I will be buying a US carrier data e-sim for the duration of the stay.

Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well! I'm sorry that you've been experiencing network issues whilst being in the USA recently. I just wanted to let everyone here know that we have been made aware that our partnership connection whilst using the USA networks was affected by their closure of their 3G services. Our network team have made us aware that from the 15th September, 4G will become available for any Vodafone customers currently in the USA who have a 4G compatible handset.

Thanks Steph. Do you specifically mean VoLTE roaming will work from the 15th Sep on AT&T?

Steph

I would also be interested to know if you are referring to VoLTE being available to Vodafone roaming customers in the USA after the 15th of September or clarification of what you actually meant

And is it using T-Mobile still or also (hopefully) AT&T for VoLTE.  T-Mobile 4G was non existent for me anyway I assume because of user capacity issues.

Apologies for any confusion caused everyone, we have limited information ourselves at the moment but I've looked into it for you all and this is everything I can tell you right now:

Our solution will go live on 15 September. The solution will enable 4G calling when roaming in the USA – to access this service customers must have a compatible 4G device (volte advanced), have updated to the latest software version. Some customers may need to complete a manual roam and connect to AT&T’s 4G network. further updates are expected in future

At the moment I have no other communications about the solution, what it will entail etc and I don't want to give you any false statements or misadvice.
